Coalition Spotlight on DDAC

Brian Lindell entered the Prevention Coordinator position with DDAC in mid-May of 2021. He writes, "DDAC has been staying consistent in addressing issues related to substance use and abuse in Delaware County. Due to coming off a year like 2020 like most prevention coalitions, DDAC has spent 2021 reengaging with the communities that make up Delaware County. In June, the coalition offered a free educational training to the general public and professionals that live in Delaware County. The speaker was Jermaine Galloway a former police officer who travels across the U.S and gives informational trainings and educates adults of what is trending in the drug world. Furthermore, DDAC has been focusing on recruiting new community members. Due to this, the coalition had a week-long booth at the Delaware County Fair to inform the general public about the coalition and our mission. From this, we were able to meet and connect with over 650 people that live in Delaware County. Along with this, we have been updating the DDAC website and writing a quarterly newsletter called “The Chatter.” The topics for the newsletter have been over vaping, marijuana, drinking and driving, stash kits, social media issues, and so much more.

For this year, the coalition has been able to meet in person or by Zoom once a month. These monthly meetings have consisted of discussing prevention campaigns, education, and other issues in regards to Delaware County. Furthermore, DDAC has used the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) campaign, “Talk. They Hear You.” This campaign is to give resources and material to parents/ guardians to start the conversation to prevent underage drinking. DDAC created and put up 3 billboards marketing the “Talk. They Hear You” message in 3 different communities in Delaware County. These billboards were located in Manchester, Earlville, and Edgewood-Colesburg, IA. We also had a summer long PSA radio message on the KMCH radio station promoting the campaign. Also, using the material supplied by SAMHSA the coalition put together a parent kit consisting of material that can help parents/guardians start and maintain the conversations to prevent underage drinking. There were 250 kits made and distributed for the West Delaware High School back to school drive through in August. Some other things that the coalition has been staying on top of were working with local law enforcement to do party patrols and compliance checks in the communities. The coalition has attempted to do Listening Sessions as well to reach out to adults in the community.

Besides reengaging with the adult demographic, DDAC has also been working with the youth in Delaware County. Maquoketa Valley High School “Teens Eliminating Lies,” youth group has started back up from last year. The coalition has supported this strong youth group over the years, and the group continues to grow from 9th through 12th grades. The two other High Schools that are in Delaware County are in the rebuilding phases due to 2020 and graduating members. We continue to work with school advisors to start the building phase of these two youth groups. To help promote and educate the coalition helped do a youth leadership day at EWALU. This day was for high school aged teenagers to spend a day networking with other high school students. The main focus of this day was to educate and inform teens about Vaping, Alcohol, Marijuana, and Safe Medication Practices.

Through 2021 the coalition stays connected through all the challenges that 2020 occurred. DDAC will continue to offer education and material to the residences and youth of Delaware County for the foreseeable future."

One of the objectives of this conference is to help build resilience in ourselves so we can continue encouraging others to do the same. An overall goal for the conference is for participants to be inspired to keep making positive change in their communities!

At this time we are planning the prevention conference to be in-person.  Recordings of most of the workshops will be available after the event. Masks are encouraged when not eating. We will take other steps to make this event as safe as possible. (5.0 CEUs have been approved by IBC, but as usual they are not available through recordings.) The conference is free to participants, with the exception of lunch. Roadside Tacos Food Truck will be available on site for attendees to purchase a meal for $10-$12.  Also, there are still several free rooms available on campus at Camp Dodge for lodging the night before.
