NLTA Supports Safe September NL Rally

Safe September NL is a grassroots organization promoting changes in Newfoundland and Labrador education focusing on school safety. Their goals include: unifying school communities – parents, guardians, students, families, teachers, staff and many more; and advocating for our children's future.

To draw attention to the important issues that remain unresolved and will impact a safe return to school, Safe September NL is organizing a rally for 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1 at Confederation Building.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association is encouraging all members, parents and concerned citizens in the metro area to support this event. For those unable to attend in person, Safe Schools NL is also investigating live streaming the rally through their Facebook page. President Dean Ingram will be one of the featured speakers.

All those who plan to attend the rally are reminded to physically distance as much as possible and wear a mask. Safe September NL organizers have the following plan to ensure participant adherence to public health orders regarding outside gatherings:

Safety in schools is our number one concern. So of course safety at a rally is just as important. For the safety of everyone attending we ask you to please do the following:
Current guidelines restrict gatherings outside to 100 people. We will begin to set up at the front of the Confederation Building. If we begin to reach our 100 person limit, we will ask people to go to a second and third location at the back parking lots of the Confederation Building. To increase visibility to Government workers, especially Premier Andrew Furey and Minister of Education Tom Osborne, attendees are welcome to set up at the other locations from the start. The rally will be live streamed on Facebook so those at other locations can still watch and listen along with those all over our province, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Along with gathering limits, for the safety of everyone attending we ask you to please do the following:
Maintain physical distancing by 2 meters (6 feet) of those outside your bubble
Wear a mask (disposable masks will be available)
Bring and use your own hand sanitizer, if possible.
If you are experiencing any COVID-19 like symptoms, or are feeling unwell please stay home and participate virtually
Other safety tips to consider:
Dress appropriately for Newfoundland weather, check the forecast for rain and wear layers
Wear comfortable shoes for walking and standing
Wear and bring sunscreen
Make sure to have taken and bring any medications you need (asthma inhaler, allergy meds, pain killers, heartburn meds, anxiety/panic meds, etc.).
Bring a small light foldable chair for those with difficulty with prolonged standing or sitting on the ground.
Use earplugs for noise if needed or wanted
Bring a fidget, toy or token item for those who need to stay busy during long periods of listening
Bring mobility aids and devices
Bring a water bottle
Bring a small snack
This is a family friendly event and bringing children and students is encouraged!
Please make sure to supervise children and pets. Pets must be on a leash at all times.
