Resilient Connecticut Climate Adaptation Summit
November 20, 2020

CIRCA's second annual Resilient Connecticut Summit will take place on November 20th. The Summit is a wonderful way to network with people working on climate resilience in a variety of sectors and to hear the latest advancements in the Resilient Connecticut project.

At the first Summit, participants:

  • Heard about the structure and progress for the Resilient Connecticut project;
  • Learned about innovative resilience planning through regional case studies and a keynote speaker, and;
  • Provided feedback on key planning and technical elements of the project. Further details for this year's event will be available soon.

Stay tuned for more information. As plans are developed, we'll share information via the Resilience Roundup and our November 2020 Summit webpage . Please share with anyone you think would be interested. The materials for the 2019 Summit are available here .
CIRCA COVID-19 Update

In accordance with public health guidelines and Governor Lamont's Executive order, all CIRCA staff will be working from home until at least April 30. If you wish to get in contact with a staff member, a list of contact information may be found at this link . We are checking our office voicemails.

Power Dialog Webinar
April 7, 2020, 4:00pm - 6:00pm

On Tuesday, April 7, 2020, and working with College and University partners across the US, the Bard Center for Environmental Policy is coordinating the convening of hundreds of conversations focused on the potential to solve the energy side of climate change by 2030. The event features 52 simultaneous, university hosted webinars, one in every state, and in DC and Puerto Rico.

The two-hour event begins with the university-hosted, one-hour state-level webinars in each state, followed by 45 minutes of community dialogs. The UConn Office of Sustainability is coordinating a webinar for Connecticut.

Mobilizing Action for Climate, Health, and Equity Webinar
April 7, 2020, 1:00pm

Join the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health to learn more about the US Call to Action on Climate, Health, and Equity and 10 priority actions. Topics include how it is being used to organize climate & health advocacy efforts on the national, state and local levels, and how you can become a visible climate leader in this critical year. Health voices must be at the forefront of climate solutions to ensure a healthy and just future for everyone.
Living Shorelines: Slowing Coastal Erosion and Saving Connecticut Habitats Webinar
April 9, 2020, 10:30am - 12:00pm

Join Kim Bradley of CIRCA and Dr. Jennifer Mattei of Sacred Heart University in the “Soak Up the Rain” New England Webinar Series on the environmental benefits of implementing living shoreline projects.

The presentation will feature Connecticut case studies and recommendations for regulators, planners, practitioners, coastal property owners, and members of the public on successfully implementing nature-based coastal infrastructure projects.

Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management
Climate Resilience Fund 2020

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is pleased to announce the availability of grants from the Climate Resilience Fund to implement climate resilience projects for climate-driven challenges facing Rhode Island communities, both inland and coastal.  Proposals are due at 4:00pm EST on April 6, 2020.
National Coastal Resilience Fund 2020

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) has announced the release of the 2020 Request for Proposals for the National Coastal Resilience Fund, a public-partnership between NFWF, NOAA, Shell, and TransRe. NFWF will award approximately $31 million in grants to create and restore natural systems in areas that will both increase protection for communities from coastal storms, sea- and lake-level changes, inundation, and coastal erosion, and also improve valuable habitats for fish and wildlife species. Pre-proposals are due at 11:59 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday April 8, 2020.
Wildlife Conservation Society Climate Adaptation Fund 2020

With funding managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, the WCS Climate Adaptation Fund will provide up to $2.5 million in competitive grants in 2020. Awards will be made to non-profit conservation organizations for applied, on-the-ground projects focused on implementing priority conservation actions designed to help wildlife and ecosystems adapt to climate change at a landscape scale.  Pre-proposals are due at 5:00 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.
Long Island Sound Futures Fund 2020

$3 million is available in environmental grants focusing on the Long Island Sound Watershed. Potential topics for planning or implementation grants include water quality, education and outreach, coastal resilience, sustainability, habitat restoration, species preservation, and restoring fish passages. Proposals are due by 11:59pm EST on June 2, 2020.

The state of Massachusetts has come through with $260,000 in grant funding for the Mohawk Trail Woodlands Partnership to help its member towns support projects related to forest stewardship, nature-based tourism and climate education.
DEP Seeks Input on New Land-Use Rules to Adapt to Climate Change

The New Jersey Department of Environmental protection recently held a forum seeking public input for a raft of new regulations that will implement Gov. Phil Murphy’s recent Executive Order 100 to reduce carbon emissions and adapt to climate change.
First Statewide Tick Study Finds Lyme Disease in Half of All Deer Ticks Collected
NBC Connecticut - March 3, 2020

The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station received a one year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last year to conduct a statewide surveillance program for ticks and tick borne diseases. According to the data, 46% of all adult deer ticks collected (2,068) were infected with Lyme disease. 
Offshore Wind Farm Development to Include Underground Cables
Westerly Sun - March 16, 2020

The joint venture between Shell and EDP Renewables to develop a 804-megawatt wind farm in Falmouth was recently presented to the Board of Selectmen. Plans for the Mayflower Wind project show the energy generated from the wind turbines will travel through underground cables to an offshore substation on the Atlantic Coast Outer Continental Shelf to another substation onshore.

The Connecticut Institute for Resilience and Climate Adaptation's (CIRCA) mission is to increase the resilience and sustainability of vulnerable communities along Connecticut's coast and inland waterways to the growing impacts of climate change and extreme weather on the natural, built, and human environment. The institute is located at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus and includes faculty from across the university. CIRCA is a partnership between UConn and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP).
