APRIL 2020
The times may be unprecedented, but Valley Humane Society's compassion for the animals and people of our community is well established. We've had to change a thing or two about how we operate, but the work to save lives and to connect people and pets in ways that enrich all continues unabated.

As one of the first area shelters to pioneer safe adoptions by appointment, we have found homes for 3 dozen dogs and cats in the past month and rescued more than 40 others. Children are enjoying Paws to Read and Humane Education lessons through our YouTube and Facebook pages, and we launched "A Moment of Comfort" pet therapy videos to help everyone alleviate the stress and isolation of shelter-in-place.

We hope you are well. We hope being at home with your pets and your family brings you a measure of joy. We hope you will reach out if you need us. Because while our doors may be closed, our eyes and ears and hearts remain wide open.
Emergency Pet Preparedness
Planning ahead to meet your pet's needs in the face of an emergency is always a good idea. Valley Humane Society is here to offer resources to help pet guardians make plans that include their pets. Download and fill out an Emergency Pet Profile to give caregivers an idea of your pet's health and preferences so they can continue to receive the best care possible in the event you are unable to do so.
Anniversary Party for One
If you're climbing the walls after a month in quarantine (okay, okay, they're calling in "shelter-in-place,") think how Megan feels: this Kitty City resident has been looking for her forever home for a year! The 3-year-old tortoiseshell is a smart, playful girl who thrives on human interaction and the freedom to do her own thing. Being at the adoption center was already stressful for Megan, but the sudden lack of visitors has turned her into one unhappy camper! Her perfect home has no other cats to disrupt her royal vibe, and offers safe indoor/outdoor options where she can do as she pleases. We are asking everyone who reads this to take action to help Megan find her forever home: please share Megan's profile through social media and email today, and let's make sure this is the last anniversary she has to celebrate by herself.
CARES Act Allows Tax Deduction
In addition to providing relief for millions of individuals and businesses affected by the pandemic crisis, the newly-signed CARES Act (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) includes a provision that benefits nonprofits as well. The law allows a charitable contribution deduction of up to $300 for individuals who claim the standard deduction (i.e., not itemized) for tax years beginning in 2020. The contribution must be made in cash to a qualifying tax-exempt organization such as Valley Humane Society. Donors are advised to consult a tax advisor with questions about how to take this deduction.

Adoption Appointments
Due to ongoing shelter-in-place orders for California, we are currently doing adoptions by appointment only. Visit our website to view available pets, then reach out to us via email or phone to receive an application or learn more information. Interviews are conducted by phone and hand-offs handled safely!

Online Fun Unleashed
Gather the kids and tune in to Facebook every Friday for a Compassion Corner humane lesson and pet enrichment activity. Bonus: Tuesdays and Thursdays, grab your favorite book and read to a member of our Canine Comfort pet therapy team! Videos are also featured on YouTube after airing.
