Public Health Emergency Unwinding Readiness: Strategies for Health Center Outreach and Enrollment Staff Webinar
When the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) ends, the current continuous Medicaid coverage requirement enacted by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) in March 2020 will no longer apply. State Medicaid agencies will be tasked with resuming normal eligibility determinations and enrollment operations after a more than two-year pause. With more than 80 million people enrolled in Medicaid, many states and experts estimate that tens of thousands of enrollees are likely to lose coverage. Luckily, community health centers are on the frontlines to help consumers not lose access to coverage. Health centers employ over 4,000 enrollment eligibility assisters who play a critical role in help Medicaid enrollees update their contact information, re-enroll into coverage, and transition to Marketplace coverage as applicable.

This webinar on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. will features national policy experts and community health center outreach and enrollment leaders and staff who will highlight their strategies and efforts to prepare their patients and communities for the end of the PHE. Speakers will share the unique tools, resources, messaging, partnerships, and other strategies they are deploying to prepare Medicaid enrollees for the end of the PHE.

National News
June is Pride Month
Pride Month is celebrated every year in June, as this marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. These were a series of equal rights demonstrations held by members of the LGBTQ+ community against oppression. This was in response to violent police raids on LGBTQ+ establishments in New York in June 1969.

Considered a pivotal moment for LGBTQ+ civil rights, Pride Month is celebrated in June to mark how far the movement has come and what still needs to be done to help ensure fair treatment for all without discrimination.

Gender-affirming care is a supportive form of healthcare. It consists of an array of services that may include medical, surgical, mental health, and non-medical services for transgender and nonbinary people.

For transgender and nonbinary children and adolescents, early gender affirming care is crucial to overall health and well-being as it allows the child or adolescent to focus on social transitions and can increase their confidence while navigating the health care system.
Take Control of High Blood Pressure with Million Hearts®
The National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have partnered together to reduce heart attacks and strokes to help achieve the Million Hearts® 2022 goals. The current focus has been to implement strategies to reduce undiagnosed hypertension, improve use of statins in high-risk patients, improve hypertension management and control for African Americans, and expanding use of self-measured blood pressure monitoring.

High blood pressure is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Although cardiovascular disease death rates have increased across all demographic groups, African Americans and other minority groups continue to be disproportionately affected. As National High Blood Pressure Education Month wraps up, learn about evidence-based resources health centers can use beyond this month to increase awareness and address barriers in the communities most affected.

Tools You Can Use:
  • Read A Three Pillar Approach to Addressing Hypertension to learn more about innovative practices Miami Beach Community Health Center implemented.
  • Use the SMBP At-A-Glance Comparison Tool to help your practice choose a home blood pressure monitor.
  • Check out the “Live to the Beat” campaign, which focuses on reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease among African Americans between the ages of 35-54.
Health Center N95 Mask Program Extended
The HRSA Health Center COVID-19 N95 Mask Program began on Monday, January 17, as a time-limited program to distribute high quality N95 masks to underserved communities and populations through health centers.

The N95 Mask Program has been extended and will now sunset on Monday, June 20. Health centers will have additional opportunities to order masks through this program before the sunset date: Monday, June 6 and Monday, June 20.

Health centers are encouraged to work with their community partners (including community and faith-based organizations, HUD-assisted housing, and aging and disability networks) to order and distribute masks to meet community needs. The ordering caps were increased to support larger orders and allow for health centers with available space to also order masks to store for upcoming months as well. All orders must be received by Monday, June 20.
National HIV Testing Day
National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) is June 27, 2022, a day to emphasize and encourage HIV testing. The theme for 2022 is “HIV Testing is Self-care.” The World Health Organization defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider.” The NHTD messaging will emphasize that HIV testing can be free, easy, fast, and confidential. HIV self-tests can be done when and where an individual chooses.

The National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), in partnership with Emory University and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is hosting a webinar highlighting the lessons learned from health center staff and patient interviews about the information ecosystem surrounding the introduction of COVID-19 vaccines.

This session will provide an overview of the rapid ethnography study component of the SARS-CoV2 Vaccines Information Equity and Demand Creation Project (COVIED).

It will present: findings from health center staff and patient interviews about the complexity of the information “ecosystem” surrounding the intro of COVID-19 vaccines; the key “narratives” that emerged to people used to justify the avoidance of COVID-19 vaccines; targets and specific strategies for developing and delivering “counter-narratives” to undermine false or misleading narratives; and examples of how counter-narratives can be developed and used as a strategy of promoting COVID-19 vaccine with patients.
