LA CAN and Growing Number of Partners Continue to Fight Against Criminalization
PUBLISHED BY LACAN

During the weekend celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., organizations across the Western region took part in actions to uplift the Homeless Bill of Rights Campaign. In Los Angeles we held a 24-Hour action in Venice that included a Second Line Parade down the Venice boardwalk, civil rights teach-ins, and an overnight sleep out that reclaimed public space and highlighted the human right to rest.
Hundreds convened in Venice Beach to increase visibility around the growing criminalization of homelessness and poverty across the country and to uplift the rights of ALL people to sit, rest, share food and otherwise exist in public space.

Overall the event was a huge success! Click HERE to view a slideshow of the event. We had coverage from KTLA (Link to video HERE), KNBC, KABC, Telemundo, Univision, and KCBS. It was a great weekend of celebration and resistance.

The vast majority of folks we interacted with in Venice were supportive of our campaign. Unfortunately, as the LA Times reports today, in Venice local officials are continuing their unjust efforts to increase policing in the neighborhood. Such trends are true in Skid Row and other areas of the city as well.

This is why we need YOU to get involved in the Homeless Bill of Rights Campaign. Unless we all stand up to protect the civil and human rights of ALL people, the City will continue its attempts to segregate public space and criminalize the lives of homeless individuals.

PUBLISHED BY Sisters Of The Road

Friday, January 17th, Sisters participated in the West Coast Day of Action and Resistance with an MLK Celebration in the cafe. We joined up with the march from Right To Dream Too (R2DToo), and VOZ to City Hall to bring attention to the wide-spread discriminatory and criminalizing practices against the poor and unhoused community members in our cities, towns and state.
