Outdoor Worship Begins
Sunday, May 16
at 9 am!
An outdoor worship service is coming Sunday, May 16 at 9 am! With capacity limits on the indoor service, and knowing many of our children and youth will not be vaccinated, we are launching an outdoor worship service after Mother's Day.

We expect the weather to be warm enough to make the outdoor worship comfortable. You may either stay in your cars or sit outside, but we ask that you please bring your own chair with you. This service will be about 45 minutes long and outdoor Sunday school for youth and children will follow at 10 am.

Online worship, Zoom youth group, and the videos for elementary Sunday school will continue to be available for those aren't yet ready to gather in-person.

Live-Streamed
Memorial Services:
This Friday and Saturday
at 10 am
Losing a loved one is tough enough during "normal" times. But losing a loved one during a pandemic has proven all the more difficult.

We want to be able to help the friends and loved ones of those who have passed to still be able to connect and grieve together even if they are unable to meet in person, so we are hosting a live-stream of some of our upcoming Memorial Services.

Please visit our Live-Streamed Memorial Services page below to access the online memorial services of Jane Shumate Pope on Friday, May 7 at 10 am, and Kathie White on Saturday, May 8 at 10 am.

Four-Week Outdoor Bible Study with Pastor Gayla in June!

Sundays in June from 4:00-5:30 pm
on "Making Sense of Scripture" by David Lose
When was the last time you picked up a Bible and read it?

Or perhaps an even more important question is, “When is the last time you picked up a Bible and understood what you read?”

I’ve had so many people tell me that they actually feel guilty about the Bible. They know they should read it, but when they do, they find it confusing and even troubling. Some people have even had the Bible used as a “club” against them — people beating them over the head with certain Bible verses.

Are you looking for a way to make sense of the Bible? I want to invite you to join me on Sundays in June, from 4:00-5:30 pm. We will look at a book by theologian and scholar David Lose, called “Making Sense of Scripture.” Weather permitting, the class will meet outside. Please let us know if you need childcare. The book is available in the church office for $14.

Please email Sharlynn at sharlynnv@visitasbury.org to sign up for this four-week study!

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, II Zoom Presentation -
Video Now Available on our Asbury YouTube Channel!
Asbury’s Church and Society Committee was thrilled to welcome United Methodist pastor and U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II as the latest in their series of Social Justice presenters on Tuesday, May 4, 2021. You can watch the video presentation on our YouTube channel! Visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6J_vTurT6I to tune in.

In this special Zoom presentation, Rep. Cleaver discusses his views and experiences related to prejudices, discrimination, and how to effectively deal with people who have very different views than we do, from both a clergy and public servant standpoint. As a highly respected faith leader, political representative, past chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, outspoken advocate for equity and justice - one who received a death threat after the recent riot at the U.S. Capitol - Rep. Cleaver brings a wealth of experience and knowledge on these issues.
Sign Up for In-Person Worship on Sunday, May 9 at 11:00 am!
Have you received both of your COVID-19 vaccines (or single shot, if you have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine)? Are you really missing the community that comes from meeting face-to-face? Then join us for worship in person!

We have begun weekly worship services at 11:00 am on Sunday morning in the Sanctuary. We'll require ongoing registrations on a week-by-week basis, beginning each Monday morning and ending at the end of the day each Thursday, so that we ensure that we have an accurate count for the weekend.

Sign up at the following link so that we can mark you down as attending! https://forms.gle/L4GnYQ7uZEr1gJo66

To ensure social distancing requirements are met, the in-person service will have a max of 90 seats available each week (80 seats in the Sanctuary and 10 seats in the balcony - to help ensure we keep it to this number, the online registration form will close once we have reached 90 registrants). Face coverings will still be required for everyone while on church property and for the entire service.

Live-Streaming Info:

If you're not ready to worship in person with us yet, we totally understand. Join us virtually at 11 am and tune into our live stream of the service at www.visitasbury.org/worship! We're really excited to introduce this as a new option for worshiping at home. Everything looked and sounded fantastic when we tried it out for the first time last week! It's going to be just as easy to tune into the live stream as it has been watching the recorded service online.

Speaking of recorded service, if you miss the 11 am broadcast, no worries! We'll have a recording of the morning service available on the Worship page and our YouTube channel by 5 pm on Sundays.
Santa Fe Trail Elementary Update
First off, we would love to thank everyone who has purchased items, especially underwear and sweatpants for Santa Fe Trail Elementary students. Nurse Leta, the school’s nurse, has been super thankful and has actually become teary-eyed whenever she has received new donations from us because they had been re-using sweatpants whenever kids have had accidents during school.

We have some new donation needs if you’d like to contribute, as the school is unfortunately out of funds because they have used their budget for the year. The list of current needs for the school is below. We also have an Amazon wish list, if you’d like to purchase online! Just click on the following link: https://a.co/3T54BPn.

1)     Band-aids of all sizes and colors, including different skin colors
  • Every class has a first aid kit and they need to be replenished
2)     Dry erase markers for classroom instruction and one on one help with kids
3)     Gum for testing
4)     Larger size sweatpants with elastic at the waist and ankle (14-16)

Donations can be dropped off in the church office or the donation bin outside of the Food Pantry entrance. Thank you so much for your generosity, Asbury friends!
Virtual Men's Breakfast - 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month at 8 am
Men of Asbury - looking for some fun fellowship time? We have a Virtual Men's Breakfast that meets at 8 am on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month!

Children's Ministry
Sunday School
Our faith word for May is "Love," and we'll focus on how to "Love each other like the members of your family" (Romans 12:10a).

We will focus on how the believers in Jesus solved conflict, helped one another, loved the community in which they lived, the Holy Spirit, and how love helps grow the church! Little children may have trouble with some of the concepts, but we will allow the children to experience awe and wonder about the stories and explore together the mysteries the Bible holds.
