A Note from Dean Cavalieri

As we head toward the end of summer and schools and businesses continue to cautiously reopen throughout our region, please know that now is not the time to become complacent in our fight against COVID-19. I urge everyone to continue to wear your mask, maintain social distance, avoid indoor crowds whenever possible, and to wash your hands frequently. These are the common sense steps that have allowed us to come very close to turning back the tide against this devastating disease while we wait for the development of a safe and effective vaccine.

Stay strong and be safe,

Thomas A. Cavalieri, DO, MACOI, FACP

Student Doctor Jamila Holston to Receive AOF Scholarship

Congratulations to Student Doctor Jamila Holston, who recently learned she was selected by the American Osteopathic Foundation's (AOF) Board of Directors and its committee members to receive a 2020 AOF William G. Anderson, DO, Minority Scholarship.

From the AOF: "AOF's Anderson Minority Scholarship was created to recognize a minority osteopathic medical student who is committed to osteopathic principles and practice, has excelled academically, and has proven to be a leader in addressing the educational, societal and health needs of minorities. The goal of this award is to recognize an exceptional student who, we believe, will be a champion in the elimination of health care disparities."

Student Doctor Holston started her journey at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS), earning her MBS degree in May 2017 and receiving the "Outstanding Academic Achievement in Master of Biomedical Sciences" Award for earning the highest overall GPA in the MBS graduating class.

The AOF will celebrate Student Doctor Holston's achievement at the 2020 AOF Honors (Virtual) Gala on October 16.

August RowanSOM Alumni Webinar Series

Last month, RowanSOM Alumni Association debuted a special webinar series to discuss important health issues in our communities. In each webinar, alumni share their expertise on various topics, followed by a question-and-answer session.

This month's webinar, "Every Pixel Tells a Story, Don't It? Staying Human in a Digital World," featured a discussion with Dr. Daniel J. Waters '82, facilitated by Rowan Family Medicine's Dr. Samantha Plasner '02, about staying connected in a disconnected prophylactically-protected world. A retired heart surgeon, Dr. Waters is a now a full-time author and novelist, as well as Medical Humanities professor at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

We All Scream for Ice Cream!

The Office of Student Affairs hosted an Ice Cream Social for all students on August 18. Students were greeted by a Mister Softee truck outside of the Academic Center during their lunch hour for complimentary ice cream cups, cones, sprinkles, popsicles and more! In these unprecedented times, we are thankful for the opportunity to provide our students with in-person engagement events.

Alumni Spotlight

Below are excerpts from interviews with two of our newly elected members of the SOM Alumni Association Board. Check out the alumni homepage for the full interviews and future Alumni Spotlights!

Rebecca Moore, DO '03
Contact Dr. Moore: [email protected]

Rebecca Moore, DO '03 is currently an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at RowanSOM and Course Director of the PBL OCS H&P2 course. Dr. Moore is also the Medical Director of the recently moved Hammonton Rowan Family Medicine office. When it is a safer environment, she looks forward to having a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new space.

Dr. Moore was first attracted to RowanSOM by its mission and dedication to its students, as well as the school's understanding of primary care and its importance to treating patients. Dr. Moore is the first and only member of her family to work in the medical field. When she was young, her mother was in a severe car accident but was able to survive with the help of rehabilitation and a dedicated team of physicians. Seeing what her mother experiences on a daily basis as a result of the accident motivates Dr. Moore to be a more compassionate physician. Dr. Moore's favorite part of her job is teaching students and watching them master a new skill. Her advice for current SOM students is to "go into a specialty that you really enjoy and have fun." She says, "You want to have fun while you are working."

When she is not working, Dr. Moore enjoys family trips to the beach and other outdoor activities, and traveling around the county with her daughters for their sports commitments.

Adrienne Rigueur, DO '06
Contact Dr. Rigueur: [email protected]

Adrienne Rigueur, DO '06 is currently an Emergency Medicine attending physician at Virtua Hospital Voorhees, NJ, where she has worked since 2010. In her middle and high school years while growing up in Camden, Dr. Rigueur participated in numerous summer programs and activities on the SOM campus, including the Scholars Program, which cultivated her interest and passion for medicine.

Dr. Rigueur's fondest memory of her time at SOM was serving as President of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and being able to host the Annual Medical Education Conference on campus. Today, she enjoys mentoring students and residents in her practice, and finds emergency medicine to be a door into health care for many of her neighbors, family and friends. Her advice for current SOM students is that "when you pick a specialty, make sure you are committed to it, and take the time you need to make that decision." She adds, "There is no rush!"

When she is not working, Dr. Rigueur enjoys watching HGTV, re-watching all of the Marvel movies, and taking care of her two sons, newborn daughter, and cocker spaniel.

SOM University Advancement Invites You to Share Your Thoughts About Medical Education

In the midst of an academic year faced with significant challenges and uncertainties due to the COVID-19 crisis, we are reaching out to alumni and friends to ask a simple question:

"Why Is Medical Education Important?"

We hope to share many of your responses over the coming months. Below is our next submission:

"Medical education is important because Google cannot give full context for educated, safe medical decision making."
John Bertagnolli, DO '83, RowanSOM Alumni Association Board Member
