7th Grade Language & Literature Hosted a Visit
Ms. Keeya Allen, author and activist, virtually visited the 7th grade language and literature classrooms last week via Zoom. The 7th grade students are working on an interdisciplinary unit that spans both language and literature as well as individuals and societies. In IB World Schools, making strong, authentic connections between disciplines is important and brings the unit of study to life. Ms. Keeya shared real life examples of how to be a "Change agent" and develop our students' critical consciousness.

We thank her for her time! Please ask your 7th grade student more about their experience with Ms. Allen's visit or their unit.

MS Students "Show Up" for Black History Month
Students across our campus responded to a survey around Black HIstory Month. As an International Baccalaureate World School, we elevate student voice and work to develop the 10 learner profile attributes. Click here to see how our Middle School students show up when asked,  Which learner profile attribute is most important for Black History Month?” My favorite student quote was the following:
“It takes an open mind or conscience to inquire about the history of Black people in America. You need an open mind to reflect, to care, to realize we need each other, to gain the knowledge that then leads to better communication, reflection and thinking. This gives us a foundation for the risk- taking to be principled in taking on the challenge of systemic racism.”

Our students are nothing short of brilliant!

Student Drop Off Procedures
Student drop off / pick up entrance is on 22nd St.; the exit comes out onto Texas Ave. S.
Students will enter through our new temporary main entrance on the west side of the building. Staff will greet them and direct them to either breakfast or to go directly to their first period class. Click here to see the map on page 9.
Parents/Guardians & Visitors
Parents/Guardians & Visitors:
To maintain a healthy and safe environment we are limiting access to school as much as possible for students and employees who learn and work here. Thus, if parents/visitors have a need to come into the school an appointment needs to be made prior to coming to school to see the person you would like to meet with. Please call 952-928-6300 for assistance.

Families who need to pick up a student from school should call the office when they arrive and wait for their child in the entryway. Students will be called out of their class once their parent/guardian has arrived on campus. Students will exit through the office to be signed out.
Attendance Reminders for Hybrid Students
Families are reminded that all student absences must be reported to the attendance office to be excused. You may phone, 952-928-6394 or email, [email protected].
Parents/Guardians of hybrid students will need to contact the attendance line if their student will attend virtually on a day they are scheduled to attend physically in the building. Students will receive a "Parent excused absence" to clearly indicate they were not in the building. This is necessary for COVID contact tracing.
Self Screening - Students
All students reporting to school at St. Louis Park Middle School are asked to screen themselves at home for symptoms before they come to school. Please review page 27-28 by clicking here for more information.

8th Grade Community Project Update February 26
Students met with their supervisors this week and took time to check in on their research, prior knowledge and goals for their Community Project. Students and supervisors signed off on page 22 of the student's digital notebook if all of this was in place. If not, your student may still have some work to do on the investigation (Criterion A) related to their project. Students will meet with their supervisor for another coaching session on March 10 to review student Project Proposals.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns you may have,

8th Graders UPLIFT Mock Trial Skills Update
Due to shifting schedules and other constraints this year, we have made the difficult decision not to offer UPLIFT. 8th graders interested in the law, please feel free to reach out to Catherine Ahlin-Halverson for summer programming information. ([email protected]  or 612-672-8314.) And watch for UPLIFT offerings next year at the middle school and the high school!
Boys' and Girls' Basketball and Spring Sports
Boys’ and girls’ basketball will started practicing starting on February 22 or February 25 and the season will go until March 25. However, because other districts we participate against are doing the same, we will be offering an intra-school season (no competitions against other schools).

Spring sports will start right after spring break (April 5) and registration will open in March.
Sports offered will be girls’ and boys’ track and field, boys’ tennis and 7th and 8th grade girls’ lacrosse.

The plan is spring sports will compete against other schools but we will have to wait and see as we get closer to the season starting.

What middle school sports will look like in the hybrid learning model:
Student Athletes will only practice, participate and compete on the days they are in session at school.

Students with last names A-K will practice and participate in any games/matches on Monday and Tuesdays.
Students with last names L-Z will practice and participate in any games/matches on Thursdays and Fridays.

Registration
You may still sign up for basketball. Click here to register: Middle School Athletics Registration (Select the Middle School sport you wish to register for).
When prompted to log in, you will log in with the same username and password you use to pay your students lunch account.

Practice started February 22 for Cohort A (last name A-K) and February 25 for Cohort B (last name L-Z). The season will last until March 25. Practices are from 4:00 - 5:15 p.m.

The following must be received by the Athletic Director for winter sports:
Registration and payment (see above for instructions).

Proof of sports physical exam (exam date can be found on PowerSchool) given within the previous three years (which clears the athlete for full participation) on file in the Health Office. If the physical expires during the season, a new physical must be provided before the athlete may begin participation. A well child check-up or immunization record does not count as a sports physical. Click here to download the 2020-2021 Sports Qualifying Physical Examination Medical Eligibility Form.

Transportation
An activity bus will be available after practice but will be different than it has been in the past. You will need to pre-register for the route your student athlete will ride. You will receive information about the activity bus once you register.
