Current parents are ALWAYS welcomed to join all or part of the monthly
"A Day at the Waldorf School" tour, which takes place just once-a-month. It's a great view into what your own child is doing in class, and a peek into the future when you visit the classes above your child's age group. Cap it off by interacting with our High School students, which is a great confirmation of the benefits of Waldorf education and how well prepared the older students are for college, and for life!

We have an amazing community at WSSD, we are so grateful for every donation we receive. This month we would like to give special thanks to:
- Thank you to our faculty and staff, for their quick actions, and the heroic firefighters that quickly contained the fire at our Altadena campus on October 24th.
- Thank to Jason Moore, father to Sterling and Saylor, for the time and effort he contributed to our Kindergarten sword project. We are so grateful for his generosity and woodworking skills!
-Miss Anna, Miss Laura, and Miss Elizabeth
- Thank you to the anonymous donors for the Altadena Pedestrian Gate Improvement!
- Thank you to the anonymous donor for the paint and primer for the Annex.

9th Grade Blacksmithing Trip
|
|
As the 9th grade students venture into high school, they are also venturing into a new physical reality (aka puberty) and the awakening of their thinking life. This often causes upheaval and conflict, the perfect time to bring the outcomes of clashing and opposing forces in the curriculum. In physics, students study thermodynamics - the impact of hot meeting cold. What happens to cold water when hot metal is plunged into it? How does heat move through different materials? These questions are taken outside the classroom on the 9th grade's two-day blacksmithing trip. Blacksmithing not only allows the students to experience how heat behaves first hand, but it also helps to ground them in their changing physical bodies - meeting them both in their intellectual and physical development.

Here are some updates from our Class of 2015:
|
|
|
Milan Joinson-Szekerka is currently a full-time student in her final year at San Diego State University majoring in Anthropology. She has an excellent GPA and made the Dean's List this year. She was also invited to be a featured student on th
e
SDSU website under the Anthroplogy department
, and gave a shout-out to her Waldorf education. She is thankful to be carrying zero student debt.
Milan has worked part-time at a boutique at The Headquarters near the bayfront for almost 3 years, helping to pay for college, and using her discretionary income to travel. This year she has visited central Mexico, Bali, and the Riviera Maya and is currently planning a visit to Spain over Christmas Break, and hopes to take a long trip to Europe after her graduation in May 2020. In the interim, she is working on an idea for a new small business (her third). Her favorite movie this year was Yesterday, her favorite book is The Millionaire Mindset.

After graduating from WSSD in 2015,
Delpha (Del) Hanson attended Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. While at Hampshire, Del took classes in theatre, studio art and history and even got the opportunity to be a Teaching Assistant for a class in which students built and ran an escape room! Del graduated in May with a B.A. in Props Design and Fabrication. Del is currently the Props Fellow at Berkeley Repertory Theatre where she will be building, buying and painting props until June 2020. Following her fellowship, Del hopes to work as a Props Artisan at a regional theatre. You can see Del’s work at

Sarah Bowen recently graduated from UC Irvine with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Earth System Science with a specialization in Oceanography. She is currently working as a laboratory assistant for the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project. She is also in the process of applying to various graduate schools in order to pursue a Masters Degree in Oceanography. Sarah lives in the Irvine area, and is passionate about ensuring water quality. Her dream job would be to work within a government agency in the capacity of environmental specialist.

Delavan Vannaken graduated from UC Merced, Class of 2019 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science and Engineering. Even more impressive, Delavan was one of only 3 students in the program to graduate Summa Cum Laude. Delavan is an avid video gamer and some of you may remember that for his WSSD Senior Project, he learned basic computer coding and created his own video game. We hope this dispels the myth that Waldorf students will somehow be technologically "behind" their peers. Delavan isn't the only WSSD graduate to choose engineering as their major. So far we've had graduates entering the fields of computer, electrical, civil, and mechanical engineering.

News from The Snake and Lily
|
As you may be aware, our store was impacted by the fire at the front of the building. We experienced smoke and dust from when the fire fighters broke into the sheet rock on the store side to ensure that the fire was completely out - which it was. As a result, we need to do some cleaning in the store as well as assess which items will need to be replaced.
|
|
Some important things to note:
- The Snake and Lily store will be closed starting Monday, November 4th. We will provide updates as to when we will reopen
- We will continue to sell SCRIP during drop off (between 8 - 9 am) and during pick up (between 2-3:30 pm)
- We hope to start offering coffee and tea during the morning drop off - location to be announced on Parent Square
- We have several books that will be available for sale at the High School and Lower School offices that are related to events happening now:
- "Two Who Survived: Keeping Hope Alive While Surviving the Holocaust" that is the story of Rose Schindler who will be presenting at the High School Wed. November 6
- "Raising Humans in a Digital World" - by the author of the middle school cyber civics curriculum
- Please don't hesitate to contact Deborah Tweit (dtweit@waldorfsandiego.org or snakeandlily@waldorfsandiego.org) if you have any questions!
We thank all who have offered their support and encouragement during this time!
The Snake and Lily Team... Deborah and Candy

What is the difference between Scrip and Escrip?
|
Scrip or ShopWithScrip.com or MyScripWallet.com are all part of
Great Lakes Scrip Center, the company and website we use at the Snake & Lily
to track all of your rebates when buying any type of Scrip; hard physical cards,
virtual ScripNow or ReloadNow when you reload an existing physical or virtual scrip.
|
|
Escrip or Escrip.com is the website where you can enter all of your debit and credit
card information to see if any of the places you shop or dine will generate rebates for you!
They are partnered with 700+ merchants and I know Bristol Farms and Lazy Acres
are on their list. Escrip on average provides about 1-2% of your total Scrip rebates
compared to the rebates you earn through ShopWithScrip.com; however it all helps
when reaching your Scrip goals!
Stay the course my friends, scrip can be a lot of fun and provide huge funds for the school,
your class trips and even tuition credit! For more details, contact Michelle Chambless our

Too Much Candy?
Give to Operation Gratitude!
|
My office will again be collecting excess Halloween candy to donate to
Operation Gratitude who makes care packages for deployed military and first responders.
In years past, we told our children the Switch Witch or Halloween Fairy would collect their candy from our porch in the morning, and she left them a nice little gift. Last year, when Alden (3rd grade) saw the Operation Gratitude flyers he raised an eyebrow and asked many questions. OUR candy went to the Halloween Fairy, but everyone else who forgot to put it out, donated it to O.G. He's still a believer, but we'll see what happens this year!
|
|
Logistically, Ms. Candie (how perfect) in the front office has agreed to receive your bags of candy. Please drop them off Friday Nov 1 or Monday Nov 4 so we can ship by our Nov 7 deadline. Don't go out and buy extra candy just to donate (it's happened). If you are really moved OG also accepts painting and notes of gratitude from the children (and adults) to send along with the candy.
Thank you,
Shaun Berger (and the troops, and your children's teeth and temperaments)

Our goal is to create a WSSD Business Directory to encourage support for our local businesses and professionals that are a part of our community.
All businesses listed will have a WSSD family connection. This is an opportunity to expand, increase and grow your business and a great way to support our community. Think of our community any time you shop, use professional services or dine out!
Our Directory is officially up on our website, under the Community Page!
|
|
Back in April our students created postcards to be sent all over the world to different Waldorf Schools. In September we will be displaying the postcards we received from other schools in our main hallway at the Altadena campus, with the display making it's way to our Colina campus at a later date.
|
|
Are you interested in sharing your Waldorf Story? It's very casual and relaxed and takes about 10-15 minutes. They can even be recorded over the phone!
In Huge Gratitude,
