MONDAY MEMO
The preschool class makes regular visits out to the garden and the chicken pen in small groups. Recently McKenna took Lila, Lucy, Troy, Griff, Lachlann, Avery, and Bodhi to observe our hen for a few minutes while dumping their classroom compost.

1st and 2nd grade girls Aurora, Olivia, Grace and Peregrine enjoyed morning snack together under their tent last week.
Greetings!

I'm so sorry I sent out a duplicate photo and greeting last week, so you get to enjoy two today!

Happy Monday!

NOTES
SPECIAL VISITING PROGRAM TOMORROW
Tomorrow, October 26, we will welcome members of 350 Vermont to Riverside. 350 Vermont is an organization that helps organize, educate, and support Vermonters to work together for climate justice. They have an ambitious goal of planting 100 thousand trees across the state by the end of 2022, and are one of our collaborating partners in our initiative to re-wild Riverside's campus. They will arrive on campus about 9:15 am and give a 45 minute presentation to students in grades 3-6 on climate justice and the importance of preserving Vermont's ecosystems, followed by a walking tour of campus, and ending with our students planting a few trees. Given that we will be outside most of the morning, students in grades 3-6 should wear warm clothing, including coats, hats and mittens, and have solid footwear, appropriate for a walk in the woods.
LATIN CELEBRATION
The Riverside Latin club entered a team in the Longhorn Certamen (hosted by the University of Texas and Harvard College) this weekend. Certamen is a collaborative contest in which teams from each school are asked questions about the Latin language, mythology, Roman history, and much more. This event was a national event with some of the best high schools in the country participating. Riverside’s team was in 3rd place overall after the preliminary rounds, which earned them a spot in the semifinals, where they were just barely edged out by Harriton High School from Bryn Mawr, PA. Participants in this event were 8th graders Jeremiah, Lydia, Sam, and Camryn. Please congratulate them if you see them around campus!
MILK CRATES
Milk crates are proving to be a very helpful tool in organizing materials on the porch that need to go home to absent students. If you are picking up supplies for an absent student, please leave the crate behind. If you have any milk crates to share, please leave them on the porch outside Krystal's office.
TICK CHECKS
We are continuing to find ticks on students in this particularly warm fall, please be checking thoroughly at home.
SELF STUDY SURVEY
In order to include everyone's voices and opinions over the next two years of self-reflection, we ask that all parents complete this short survey about your Riverside experience. This is the last week the surveys will be open, they will close on October 31. Your thoughts will be incorporated in the reports written by committees covering a range of topics from governance to student experience.
RIVERSIDE APPAREL ORDERS
Order forms went home with students last week, we hope you like the variety of items chosen and designed (only a few are pictured here) and will consider making some purchases to show off your Riverside pride! Please return forms with payment by check to Krystal by Friday, November 5. We expect apparel to be in before the December holidays. Please check the "this is a gift" box at the top of the form if you want us to keep the purchases a secret from your child (and not send them home with them).
SKATING AND SKIING
We are still in the process of planning our Friday afternoon winter programs at Fenton Chester Arena, Burke Mountain, and the KTA/Dashney X-Country Trails.

Skating (November and December): We will begin skating next week with the Caelum and Ignis houses, and pick up for those students is at the arena at 3:15. Students in Terra and Aqua houses can be picked up at Riverside at the usual dismissal times. There is no EDP for students who have gone skating.

The arena is requesting to know in advance which students will need to rent skates. First, check the skate bin on the front porch outside of Krystal's office to see if you can have a pair from there, then, if you know you'll need rentals, please use this survey to let us know. Feel free to donate skates to the bin as well!

Skiing: Forms for the downhill ski program went home last week and are due back this Wednesday. Note that there is a waiver that can only be completed online, in addition to the three on paper: Riverside Program, Medical Authorization, and Rental Agreement (pages 3 and 5 of this doc), to be completed by everyone, even if you have your own equipment.

X-Country forms will be going home to those families soon.
HALLOWEEN AT SCHOOL
All PreK-8 students are welcome to wear costumes on Friday, October 29 and/or to bring treats to share to celebrate Halloween. We will organize an outdoor costume parade and our traditional pumpkin hunt in the morning. Those activities will begin on the soccer field and parents are welcome to join us there.

Some classrooms may have special plans or parties, please look for those details in the grade's lesson plans below. If you are planning to prepare something in your kitchen, please consult with teachers about any dietary restrictions in your class.

We will allow a reasonable amount of candy sharing and consumption on Friday the 29th and Monday the 1st, please teach your own child what your own expectations are for consuming candy at school. Please don't let students come to school planning to share candy on Nov. 2nd or after.
HALLOWEEN AFTER SCHOOL
From Student Council President Lennon Daffinrud: On Friday, the 29th of October, the Student Council invites everybody to come to the Halloween party from 5:30-7:00 pm. There will be a Haunted House that we will take groups of people through. Students will only be in the House for a short time, so there will be very little indoor pod mixing. We will have an easy level for younger kids, a middle level, and a scary level. We are planning to wrap up the Haunted House with a super scary haunted trail! When/if you are not going through the Haunted House, you can participate in fun activities outside! At 7:00, the middle school will have a spooky Halloween dance in the barn! The dance ends at 9:00.
CHESS CLUB
Riverside chess club is starting up! Beginning November 3rd, and every Wednesday after that, Mr. G and Nathan will be running a chess club for anyone of any age (in the past we have had homeschoolers and parents join us) who would like to learn the game or push what they know to the next level.
  • Our earliest elementary students will meet in Allee's room at 3:00 for a short lesson and then some time to play a few quick games. Our middle age group (3rd through 5th grade) will meet on the stage in the assembly hall. They will get a game in, then have a quick lesson, and then play again. Both these groups will wrap up between 3:30 and 3:45. We would love at least one parent to commit to being in the room, so Mr. G can bounce back and forth. If you want to help out that way, please email Mr. G. Parents should aim to pick up around 3:30 unless their kid is in Crazy 8s, which begins at that time.
  • Middle schoolers will begin their chess club at 3:45 after packing their bags. We will also meet in Allee's classroom. They will set up their boards, then have a chess lesson, then get ample time to play.  6-8 th grade Chess club wraps up at 4:45. If there are any parents who want to supply a healthy snack for the active brains, please let Mr. G know
Last year we sent three students to the state chess tournament. This year, we hope to send more!
PAG MEETING
The Parent Advisory Group will meet next on Wednesday, November 10 at 5:00 pm. Dinner will be provided. If you have topics you'd like to add to the agenda please email PAG Co-Leader Kim Adams. All parents are welcome to attend this meeting.

RADA CATALOGUE FUNDRAISER
Parent Annie Patoine (1st grader Paul, 4th grader Lily, 6th grader Rosa, Lacey '20) has organized a catalogue sale with Rada Knives and Kitchen Tools. A percentage of each sale will be donated back to Riverside to help meet the parents' $25,000 fundraising goal (approximately $20,000 remaining since the yard sale). Items from this catalogue make great upgrades to your own kitchen inventory or wonderful gifts for others during the holiday season.

  • Catalogue (going home with students today) sales are open until November 12, when forms should be returned to Krystal. If you place an order through the catalog, then the order will be shipped directly to the school.
  • Online orders are open until November 19. Share the link (https://radafundraising.com?rfsn=6152657.008dc66) with friends and family, and products can be shipped directly.

If you have any questions, you can email Annie Patoine.
