'Entry Level Positions' The Service Industry retrospective.
Imperfect solutions for imperfect times...
Hey all - I hope you're hanging tough on International Workers' Day. I rattled on pretty extensively in the most recent newsletter so I aim to be more merciful with the quantity of hyperbole this time. But I have a few thoughts I'd like to share before we get to, as the man used to say, "the musical portion of the program"...

The current situation with the pandemic is leaving us all with a lot more questions than answers. It's difficult to make plans or to even see what the future holds for each of us when so many are struggling just for food and housing security. My heart goes out to everyone who is displaced from employment or faced with the prospect of returning to work in dicy circumstances. When we eventually reach a different side of this I hope the plot isn't lost and that folks don't suddenly lose the new found respect they've developed for those that have kept this country running during the chaos. (AND, I'm not referring to the politicians and bankers here...) I hope that the sting will be deep enough amongst the suffering while a healthy portion of the relatively unscathed will feel sufficient contrition to engage a real debate directed towards making our society more equitable.

If you're like a lot of folks, you probably have some time to read right now. I highly recommend Kurt Vonnegut's 'Jailbird'. It has a fairly extensive non-fiction opening section dealing with the American labor movement that bleeds into the fictional novel. It's informative, humorous, sad and entertaining all at once. (Incidentally, I scraped the image of the signed book off the internet...upon closer inspection the dedication is to Donald Farber, Vonnegut's longtime attorney, who was also my brother Barry's theatrical attorney. Farber also authored a substantial portion of the authoritative legal textbooks dealing with music and theatrical law. Barry always spoke highly of him.)

But I digress...it seems like the nature of just about everything is going to change because of what's happening right now (excepting human nature, of course). Especially ripe for a reboot is work and the workspace. I'm definitely not a communist and don't fancy myself as a socialist however I do believe the problem is that every one knows what they think they're worth but don't give too much thought to what other people are worth as long as it's cheap. And that needs to change. We should all want the basics and good things for others that we want for ourselves.

Now that we have that out of the way it's time for me to revert to semi-sleazy record salesman guy.
I really appreciate everyone who made use of the deals offered in the last newsletter. I was able to pass on over $800 to the various causes because of your patronage. Those deals remain in place through the end of May. As far as the "Corn-Teen" LP and CD deals offered last time I've added some titles and a few sold out. I had intended a more streamlined ordering process but my main work computer decided to go on strike this morning.

Finally, Bandcamp is waiving all their fees for artists and labels today (Friday May 1st) which makes it an especially good time for you to pop over there and pick up music. We've added another nine album titles from the Saustex back catalog and have a new digital "best of" from The Service Industry that seems especially apropos at the moment. (more on that immediately below)

And if you're feeling, as my old partner Jukebox used to say - "financially embarrassed", 40 label titles are free for limited streaming on Bandcamp and all are available on the major streaming platforms. Additionally I've included a short list of some recommended livestream concerts below...

Revisiting THE SERVICE INDUSTRY with the new retrospective best of ‘Entry Level Positions: A Beginner’s Guide to The Service Industry’
Those of you who are relative newcomers to the world of Saustex Records probably aren’t aware that we had a short-lived offshoot imprint called Sauspop Records about a decade or dozen years back. Basically the idea was that Sauspop would offer releases that were less roots and punk oriented and I dare say more polished and pop-leaning - not that it what supposed to be some sort of cash grab, it was really more about expanding horizons. If nothing else it affirmed that I know very little and care even less about what is actually “popular”.

The centerpiece of this new venture was a group of former bandmates, co-workers and folks I’m still happy to call friends in Austin known collectively as The Service Industry. The Service Industry is fronted by Kansas City transplant Mike McCoy (Cher U.K) on lead vocals with Julie Lowery on occasional lead vocals, backing vocals and percussion while one of my best friends in the world Andy Thomas shares guitar duties with Robbie Araiza (The Wayouts), and Julie’s significant Hunter Darby (Wannabes, Diamond Smugglers, Shoulders, Hickoids) plays bass alongside Travis Garaffa on drums to hold down the rhythm section. This bunch of lifers coalesced at their shared workplace, Austin’s now defunct Dog & Duck Pub, where they were employed variously at one point or another as bartenders, cooks or handymen in the ongoing effort to support their rock’n’roll habits while making a living. What began as the routine sniping and bitching associated with restaurant work took on a life of its own in the form of the band.

The band recorded four full-length albums in a little under five years ‘Ranch is the New French’ (2006 Build Gut/Sauspop), ‘Limited Coverage’ (2007 Sauspop), ‘Keep The Babies Warm’ (2008 Sauspop) and ‘Calm Down’ (2010 Sauspop). Though inactive for most of the past decade outside of a few reunion shows they released a new single ‘I’m on My Way’ b/w ‘Winter is a Submarine’ on Austin’s Flak Records at the end of 2019.

Current events show the band’s work to be especially prescient. While there is plenty of inside joke snark there is also ample thoughtful, informed vitriolic lyricism dealing with income inequality, immigrant labor, the general lack of respect shown common workers, corporate greed and the devolution of America cast against a varied musical backdrop encompassing Heartland Power-Pop, rootsy ballads, sleek-ish indie pop rock and obtuse punk tinged with psychedelia. It seems like the right time to revisit their catalog with this digital-only retrospective. They deserve a first, second and third listen.

'Entry Level Positions' is available beginning Friday May 1st via Bandcamp (along with the rest of their back catalog.) You can pick up the compact disc versions as part of the Corn-Teen Deal below (that's all four albums for only $20 postpaid in the U.S. that includes a $5 donation the charities mentioned!)

SUGGESTED LIVESTREAMS...
The livestream home concerts are an imperfect solution to an imperfect situation but the bottom line is there's a lot of musicians out there scrambling to pay the rent and/or just wanting to keep busy. Obviously some are higher-performing than others - here's a few recommendations for upcoming livestream shows via Facebook. If you like what you see tip the act, they shan't refuse.

Gerry Slattery
“The Doghouse Virtual Pub”
Most every day 7:30pm GMT + 1
I made Gerry's acquaintance last summer in Memphis while he was vacationing. I didn't realize at the time that he is a professional musician who normally makes his living on the road across the UK and Europe with a variety of projects including a Sun Records tribute show. He's a class guy and plays a wide variety of classics from across the decades with passion and style. Pop in the Doghouse and catch him. Because this is hosted daily from his personal FB page we can't post a link but stroll by his profile and have a look and listen.

Stefan Murphy
Friday May 1st 5-8pm EDT
Stefan Murphy aka Count Vaseline hails from Dublin but now calls Atlanta home. He's been doing a pretty extensive series of daily shows titled "Lockdown Lullabies" featuring covers by his favorite artists including The Velvet Underground and The Fall. Stef is touting this as his first "proper" livestream concert concentrating on his own material.

Mean Motor Scooter
Friday May 1st 6-7pm CDT
My favorite young garage rock band, Ft. Worth's Mean Motor Scooter will only need an hour to virtually rock your ass and pimp their new EP 'Mr. Sophistication'.

The Beaumonts
Sunday May 3rd 7pm CDT
America's favorite porno honky-tonk band play a show direct from their on-again, off-again home, the Central Lubbock Correctional Facility, to benefit Austin's Lost Well nightclub and to put some money on their commissary books. It's not like they had anything else to do.

Hamell On Trial
Saturday May 9th 1-2pm EDT
Ed Hamell aka Hamell On Trial has done a series of very successful livestreams since shelter in place began that featured his back catalog. Now, he brings you 15 new tunes penned during the new reality "Hamell's Pandemic Songs". This will surely be worth your time.

Hickoids
Friday May 15th 8pm-10pm CDT
There was some discussion within the band as to whether this new format is really the proper medium/milieu for the Hickoids. It's going to be a challenge to squeeze all the corn, sweat and cigarette smoke through copper wire and fiber-optic cable but hopefully the tastelessness will shine through in equal proportion to the clams as the band plays "Livestream from Corn-Teen"to benefit The Lost Well and to continue to pay for the rehearsal space they can't currently use.
GIVE SOME AND GET YA SOME DEALS! GIVE THE BARTENDERS $OME!
THE "SUFFER NOT IN SILENCE SALE" AKA THE "CORN-TEEN DEALS" - OVER 100 CD AND LP TITLES AT OUR LOWEST EVER MAIL-ORDER PRICE.
GIVE THE BARTENDERS $OME! MAKE IT A FIVE PACK!
And, you may or may not know that I was a bartender for over a decade. In an effort to help out my drink slingin' friends and other club staff who lost 10% or more of their annual income to SXSW cancellations I'm making the following offer. Send $10 or more to the link below and I will send you the three 12" x18" posters below from our cancelled SX music week events and two of the undistributed "Those HICKOIDS gave me CORN VIRUS SXSW2020" buttons pictured above and I will pick up the postage and pass along 100% of the proceeds to the employees of the venues. Be sure and include your mailing address and please use the 'Family/Friends" option so that money is not eaten up by fees. The exorbitant price of international postage dictates that I can only make this offer for the U.S. IF you simply can't live without these items and live elsewhere email me at jeff.smith(at)saustex.com and I'll work something out that offsets the postage.

THE SUFFER NOT IN SILENCE SALE AKA THE CORN-TEEN DEAL - COMPACT DISCS
From now through the end of May choose any FOUR or the CD’s listed below for $20 postpaid in the US and Saustex will donate 25% of the gross sale ($5 for the CD deal) in an even split between Feeding America and Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). After placing your order via the PayPal link please send a brief email to jeff.smith@saustex.com and enter your selection by identifying letters and numbers (Example: CD01). We only have a few copies of many of the "other labels/artists" items in stock and some will sell out. International customers: send an email to jeff.smith@saustex.com with your selections and I'll send you an invoice that reflects a purchase price of $16 plus the shipping.

Saustex Records’ is proudly reissuing the 20th anniversary edition of the Hamell on Trial live album ‘Ed’s Not Dead ---- Hamell Comes Alive!'.
The CD edition is long out-of-print and this marks the first broad streaming and digital release and vinyl edition. The LP is a hyper-limited edition of 100 copies on opaque white vinyl and will include an oversized reprint of the cartoon booklet contained in the original CD, hand-glued cover and a download card with bonus edit tracks. Originally the album was slated to begin deliver some time in March but the big lacquer plant fire in February and now the current pandemic situation has ended up delaying the manufacture. We hope to be able to ship no later than early June and the pre-order gets you immediate access to the digital download and streaming edition.

The album is culled from live shows in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and San Diego back in 2000 when Ed was the regular opening act for Ani DiFranco and was also on the roster of her Righteous Babe Records. Ani had her front-of-house engineer record Ed’s show nightly with the unspoken intention of releasing a live album for her label.

Things were going well...Ed was playing for much larger audiences than he was used to and Ani’s audiences were very gracious and receptive. Then, following some dates with Ani as Ed resumed his smaller scale club touring, tragedy struck when Ed was involved in a serious automobile accident that laid him up for nine months. He broke three vertebrae, his wrist, ankle and had 52 staples in his head. He had to wear an upper body brace for the duration of the 9 months.

As a working musician whose bread and butter is live performances this was devastating. Luckily, some friends came to the rescue in the form of Ani’s manager Scott Fisher who gave Hamell the tapes so that he could self-release an album and keep the money, and his good friend George Fontaine (now president of New West Records) who ponied up the money for CD manufacturing. Ed’s longtime road manager Ricki C sifted through the tapes and culled the best performances.
