Summer Reading Activities, Programs and Prizes for Adults
Read, write, listen and create to complete Library activities in the 2022 Adult Summer Reading Program.

Each completed activity will earn you one chance to win one of six prizes: our grand prize of a $150 gift certificate to the KOA campgrounds in Middleborough, or one of five $25 gift cards to these local eating establishments: Boston Tavern, the Cabin, the Charred Oak Tavern, Fisher's Pub and the Main Ingredient.

Prizes will be awarded at the end of the program in late August. One prize per person, and you must be at least 18 years old to participate in this program.
ASRP Featured Activity Badges of the Week

This summer we'll be highlighting three activities each week in the Adult Summer Reading Program to whet your appetite to register, enter to win fun prizes, and learn more about the Library.
Camp Crafts

Many of us have fond memories of crafts we made as kids at camp – a log cabin out of popsicle sticks, a pot holder woven on a homemade loom, a leather wallet, or a lanyard keychain. You have three options for this activity:

Send us a photograph of a craft you still have from long ago that you can’t bear to part with; make a new “campy” craft and send us a picture of it; or write a brief paragraph about a crafting experience you had as a child at camp.
 Read Beyond the Beaten Path

Complete two of these three activities:
Check out a book about an outdoor activity like kayaking, camping, or boating; take home a movie about an outdoor adventure gone wrong like “RV,” with Robin Williams, “Without a Paddle,” with Dax Shepard, or “The Great Outdoors” with John Candy; or check out an e-magazine from the Overdrive digital collection. Some of the outdoor/adventure titles include Field & Stream, Birds & Blooms, and Outdoor Life.
Pizza Garden Take-and-Make Kit

Reserve a kit to grow your own ingredients for homemade pizza sauce. Each kit includes soil and seeds to grow basil, oregano and tomatoes, as well as a recipe for homemade sauce.
Adventure Is Out There with Mike Bent
Award-winning entertainer and magician Mike Bent brings his show to Middleborough featuring comedy, magic, puppets, music, sound effects and riveting storytelling. The event will take place on Thurs., July 7, 2:00-3:00 p.m. at the Town Hall (on the lawn, weather-permitting, or indoors, upstairs).

Bent uses fun, interactive magic to spark young readers' imaginations, taking them off the beaten path to exciting summer reading adventures. It will leave you wanting s'more!

Adventure Is Out There highlights some of our favorite books including Spy Camp by Stuart Gibbs, The Boy Who Cried Bigfoot! by Scott Magoon, A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen, and Llama Llama Loves Camping by Anna Dewdney.

This program is generously supported by the Wilfred M. Silvia Trust.
Children's Summer Reading Program
The s'more kids read and complete activities this summer, the s'more chances they have to win one of five grand prizes, free books and weekly ice cream giveaways! This program is for pre-readers through grade 6, but kids entering 6th grade in the fall can choose to participate in the Teen program instead, if they prefer.

We've collaborated with the Middleborough Public schools so you can log your school summer reading in our program. Click the link below to get started.
Camp out with a good book and let it take you on an adventure!
Author Visit with Alec Carvlin
Calling all cosmic chefs! On Thurs., June 30, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., author Alec Carvlin will be reading his debut picture book, How to Bake a Universe. Kids will love decorating their own cosmic sunglasses, hearing the book read aloud by the author, and asking questions about the fun and funky science at the end. So come on down and bring nothing! Just make sure you have enough.  (Confused by that last bit? Come to the program to find out what that means.)

Space is limited, so call the Library at 508/946-2470 to sign up.
Summer Reading Camp Crafts Series for Kids
Our summer Camp Crafts series kicks off on Tues., July 5 with Friendship Bracelets. This program will be held in our Large Meeting Room from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Just stop in -- no registration required!

Look for future programs to make other traditional camp crafts like paracord survival bracelets, tie dye, and more.
Play Your Way To K
Kids entering Kindergarten in the fall are invited to participate in this play group organized by Meg Quirke from the Middleborough Public Schools.

The group will meet at Pierce Playground on Wednesdays June 29, July 6 and 20, and August 3 and 17 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. In the case of inclement weather it will be moved indoors to the Library's Large Meeting room.
SUMMER MEANS IT'S CARPOOL CINEMA TIME!
Remember that this Fri., June 24 is our old-fashioned carpool cinema showing the film Encanto and co-sponsored by the Middleborough Parks Department.

Gates open at 7:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 8:30 p.m. on the lower softball fields at 26 Jackson St. The Friends of the Middleborough Public Library, in partnership with the Main Ingredient, will be selling snacks and drinks to support the Library.

Pick up a ticket from the Library by closing time (8:00 p.m.) on Thurs., June 23. Ticket holders must arrive at the movie by 8:00 p.m. Friday.

This program is generously supported by the Wilfred M. Silvia Trust.
Toe Jam Puppet Band Returns For Their Annual Visit
We hope you've heard by now that Tues., June 28, 6:30 p.m. marks the return of this annual Summer Reading tradition! Join us on the Town Hall lawn (or, in the case of inclement weather, indoors in the ballroom on the second floor) for fun and great tunes from the Toe Jam Puppet Band.

This program is generously supported by the Wilfred M. Silvia Trust.
Take the Teen Summer Reading Challenge
Read and complete activities for the chance to be a winner of one of eight Grand Prizes this summer in the Teen Summer Reading Challenge that's happening now through August 18.  Tweens and teens in grades 6-12 are invited to read what they want and log their time using Beanstack. Registrants who sign up can select a free book to get them started!
Participants who log 12 hours of time will complete the program and earn a chance to win wireless earbuds. Keep reading to earn a personalized bookplate and a chance towards a $25 Amazon gift card.

The virtual tickets earned through reading and activities can be put into drawings to win gift cards in the Grand Prize Raffle. You could win a book light and a gift card to one of these businesses: Amazon, Cumberland Farms, Dairy Queen, Dunkin' Donuts, Nova Trampoline Park, Regal Cinemas, Target, and GameStop.

For more information, visit our Teen Summer Reading page.

Funding for this program was made possible by the generosity of the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library and by donations made by Dairy Queen.
It's Marvelous Pool Pass Time!
Summer's here and we've got a new pass to celebrate!

Starting Mon., July 4, you can check out a pass to the Middleborough town pool.

Each pass allows four people into the pool for free. You can pick up the pass any time during the two days leading up to your visit. Passes are due back the day after your visit (but will never be due on a Friday or Sunday). Reserve your pass today!

The pool pass is made possible thanks to the Middleborough Parks Department.
New Online Resources for
Learning, Research and Fun
Starting July 1, you'll be able to take advantage of even more trustworthy online content from new databases that are not available to consumers on the Internet without a paid subscription, thanks to the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) and the Massachusetts Library System (MLS). If the more than 1,600 libraries across the state subscribed to these databases individually, the expense would be millions of dollars more than the collaborative statewide contract.

No library card is needed to access this content. You can find it on our webpage or on the website of the commonwealth. See below for a sampling of the new databases, funded jointly by the MBLC and MLS with state funding and federal support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the MBLC.
Gale LegalForms offers a wide selection of Massachusetts-specific, customizable legal forms such as real estate contracts, wills, premarital agreements, bankruptcy, divorce, landlord tenant forms, and many more.
Transparent Language Online for Libraries provides lessons and language learning for more than 100 different languages, and is available as both a mobile app and on the web.
PebbleGo is a database for students in kindergarten through third grade that covers animals and biographies. It includes text-to-speech on all articles and buttons, with narration in both English and Spanish.
Britannica Moderna is a Spanish language encyclopedia for older students and the general public. It offers many different tools — including thousands of articles, images, maps, dictionaries, and atlases — for your research.
Gale Interactive: Science is a virtual lab which gives middle and high school students access to interactive 3D models along with guided lessons and lab activities.
Students can zoom in, rotate, or pull 3-D models apart to explore and experiment with complex scientific topics.
Gale Presents Peterson's Test Prep offers students of all ages help with standardized test preparation, career certification exams, researching and selecting college and graduate schools, finding tuition assistance, and exploring careers.
