Message from the President
Dear Members,
The 2022 IISE Annual Conference in Seattle in May was a success for the Construction Engineering and Management Division! Our Town-Hall meeting included a round-table discussion about the needs of the division and ideas for future growth. Both the need for more involvement with our Division members through either social media or the IISE Connect platform, and the continued search for more volunteer board members, were topics of discussion. We had three attendees to the Town-Hall that expressed interest in joining the Division, which was both exciting and encouraging. The Division also had 11 paper presentations ranging from topics in Advances in Construction and BIM, to Project Management and Risk Analysis, to Supporting Sustainable Infrastructure. We had a great mix of non-board members and board members to speak within the track, and all the presentations were well-attended. I want to congratulate everyone who spoke and volunteered. Everyone had great presentations that were both informative and a great addition to the work being done within the Construction Engineering and Management discipline. The conference also included inspiring guest speakers, including industrial engineers from Boeing Co., Georgia Tech, and Nordstrom Inc. Along with the plethora of engaging presentations across the other divisions, the 2022 conference was an overwhelming success after two years of virtual-only options.
Thank you to our board members, the IISE staff, and the Annual Conference Track Chairs and volunteers for the work and planning they did to make the 2022 Annual Conference a success! We look forward to seeing everyone again at the 2023 Annual Conference scheduled for May 20-23 in New Orleans, LA. As always, please feel free to reach out to me at ewall@cavse.msstate.edu, or any of the other board members, if you wish to get involved.
Thanks,
Emily Wall, PhD, PE

Member Spotlight
Shelia Barnett is a Research Engineer at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Institute for Systems Engineering Research (ISER). Before joining ISER, Shelia spent over 11 years in aircraft maintenance for the Department of the Air Force. She developed process flow for new and existing aircraft depot workflow managing a team of maintainers and engineers for F-15 and Global Hawk, managed multi-million-dollar facility and equipment projects, and championed predictive analysis for incoming depot workload for C-5, C-130 and F-15. She also championed a team to inspect, identify or predict required facility repairs and equipment replacement needs in order to accurately budget and plan for facility maintenance or upgrades prior to failure.
Shelia has a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Clemson University as well as a M.S in Industrial Engineering from Clemson University. Her educational and work experience have allowed her to be involved in a wide range of projects in the Department of Defense, private industry, and academia. She is currently working with the Navy on remote maintenance initiatives and with the Army on weather-related decision-making with AI, energy management, and remote surveillance. Message from the Editor
Hello, everyone!
A recent article from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) discusses how construction engineers are designing building materials for greater energy efficiency. (Full disclosure: the USACE is my employer.) The article "Protecting, modernizing our nation’s infrastructure" discusses how using special paints and coating on infrastructure could potentially support absorption of solar energy in the wintertime and reflection solar energy in the summertime, resulting in greater sustainability. The use of such an approach would be of great benefit to areas with limited access to safe and reliable energy supplies. I hope that researchers continue to innovate so that new and even cleverer means of promoting energy efficiency are achieved, with the end result of reductions in energy requirements and maybe even in carbon footprints.
The 2023 IISE Annual Conference and Expo is scheduled for May 20-23, 2023. Please make sure to keep an eye out for the abstract-submission deadline later this year. We look forward to seeing your material for the Construction Engineering and Management Track, and finding out how you are applying construction engineering and management principles in your own occupation or coursework.
The Division is always looking for new members to sign up and provide great insights – whether from industry, academia, government, or another sector. Please contact us to find out more about getting involved with the Division today!
Respectfully,
William Leonard
