Good Practice: Common Questions About Supervising Physiotherapist Interns
Questions regarding supervision expectations are some of the most common questions posed to Physiotherapy Alberta. That’s not surprising given the range of supervision relationships physiotherapists may find themselves in, and the diverse training and experience those supervisors may encounter in their supervisor-supervisee relationships.

Mandate Change (Response to Bill 46)
In December 2020, the Health Statutes Amendment Act, (“Bill 46”) received Royal Assent. The Act includes several amendments to the Health Professions Act including provisions that require regulatory colleges to cease functioning as professional associations and to divest themselves of any professional association functions they currently perform. In this episode, Jody and Leanne discuss the profound effect that the spread of misinformation has had on the public’s trust of institutions and regulated health professionals alike. Resource Corner: Supervision
Supervision Standard of Practice: The physiotherapist is responsible and accountable for the physiotherapy services provided by personnel working under her/his supervision (supervisees).

Supervision Guide: Supervision is an essential competency for physiotherapists working in Canada’s health system. While no one supervision model will apply to all contexts of physiotherapy practice, this guide provides a framework to support effective supervision in clinical practice to help ensure that Physiotherapy Alberta’s practice standards are met.

Restricted Activities: A restricted activity is a regulated health service that by law can only be performed by individuals authorized to perform them. Restricted activities for physiotherapists are divided into those activities which are authorized to all regulated members of Physiotherapy Alberta, provided certain conditions are met, and those that require additional authorization from Physiotherapy Alberta.

In this episode, Simon Cooke, Physiotherapy Alberta Council Vice-President, and Leanne Loranger, Manager of Policy and Practice, discuss the considerations, challenges, and rewards of supervising physiotherapy interns.

Good Practice: Is There a Supervision Relationship? Any health-care provider who delivers services to an individual patient owes a duty of care to that patient and is responsible for the care they provide, as well as their acts, errors, and omissions. When a physiotherapist is supervising another health provider, they have additional responsibilities related to their role.
