MAYOR'S UPDATE

During our 246-year history, America has faced many tests of its endurance. The failure of the Articles of Confederation (the first Constitution of the United States), the War of 1812, a Civil War, the Depression, two World Wars, the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam War protests, the assassinations of four Presidents and Dr. King, and 9/11 just to name a few.

Each time America has been tested, it has survived, and most times, it has emerged a better nation. America has proven to be a resilient country.
Based on the events of the last six or seven years and in the past couple of weeks, some might say that America is taking another test itself right now. Tests like these are never easy, mainly when many voices have different answers. What are we to do?

The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence took a giant leap of faith before committing the Colonies to America’s first test. They made this pledge to each other at the end of our founding document:

"And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor."

May we pledge to find the courage to hold true to our beliefs so that ourselves, our families, and the people in our community are safe, cared for, and valued.
What an amazing weekend here in Ossining. We are all so happy that the annual Independence Day Fireworks at Louis Engel Waterfront Park were back this summer. The Ossining RiverJam show that featured PABLITO Y SU LATIN SHOW was spectacular. And what can I say – the food trucks for dinner on a Friday? FRI-YAY!!

This week we have even more fun events happening in our various parks throughout Ossining. Tonight for the Summer Acoustic Music Series at Market Square, we have Blame it on the Dog playing from 7-8:30 PM. Then on Friday, Ossining RiverJam is back with Marc Von Em - Food trucks at 5, concert at 7. We’ll see you there!
I am always happy to have elected officials from various levels of government learn more about our community: Yesterday, we welcomed Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney. He met with some of our small business owners. Our own Sandy Galef and Town Council representatives were with us to help answer questions. But mostly, it was an opportunity for our entrepreneurs to speak directly with the Congressman about their concerns.
 
Please join me on Saturday at 3 pm at Market Square, as the community will have an opportunity to meet with State Senator Pete Harkam. With the redistricting changes, Ossining now becomes part of his district.
It’s National Ice Cream Month. Just in time for summer!

Like with other foods, the exact origin of ice cream is unknown. However, we do know that ice cream's origin likely dates back to A.D. 54 to 68 in Rome.

The first appearance of ice cream in the U.S. is found in a letter by Maryland Governor William Bladen in 1744. Early presidents also had a liking for ice cream. In fact, in the summer of 1790, George Washington spent approximately $200 for ice cream. For a while, ice cream was only an occasional special treat, mainly for the rich. So … as they say… I scream you scream! We all scream for ice cream!
The public is invited to comment on a draft work plan being reviewed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to investigate the Sun Valley Nursery Filling Station site (“site”) located at 136-140 Croton Avenue, Ossining, Westchester County.

Draft Investigation Work Plan: The draft investigation work plan, called a "Remedial Investigation Work Plan" (RIWP), was submitted to NYSDEC under New York's Brownfield Cleanup Program. The investigation will be performed by 136-140 Croton Avenue LLC ("applicant") with oversight by NYSDEC and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).

How to Comment: NYSDEC is accepting written comments about the Draft RIWP for 30 days, from June 22 through July 21, 2022. Access the RIWP and other project documents online through the DECinfo Locator: https://www.dec.ny.gov/data/DecDocs/C360207/.

This week’s Legislative Meeting will take place on Wednesday 7/6, at 7:30PM over Zoom.
Some items of note:
  • We will start with two presentations: one from Village Manager Karen D’Attore on the Village’s projects, and one from Treasurer Dale Brennan on the Village’s finances, for the first half of 2022.
  • There will be a resolution adopting what is now Local Law #5 of 2022 (formerly LL 7) adopting the ability for residents to be offered the solar credit program through Westchester Power.
  • Finally, there is a resolution adding two new members to the CPCRB.
