Reminder:
Often referred to as the TZG or Tripartite Zoonoses Guide, this report was
launched in March 2019 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and the World Health Organization (WHO). It fills a widely acknowledged and daunting void in the One Health field: how to deal with zoonotic disease epidemics in a systemic manner across the globe. A prior, similar, joint publication was written in 2008 by these three agencies (see
Zoonotic Diseases: A Guide to Establishing Collaboration between Animal and Human Health Sectors at the Country Level
). The TZG, is currently available in English via the OIE, with accompanying tools in the six major UN languages to be unveiled sometime in 2020. See

The U.S. CDC One Health Office leads
One Health Zoonotic Disease Prioritization (OHZDP) workshops
in countries, regions, and other areas to bring together experts from many different areas who work to protect the health of people, animals, and the environment. Workshop participants collaborate to identify a country, region, or other area's top zoonotic diseases to target for One Health collaborations and to develop strategies for tackling the newly prioritized diseases. A
new report

Neglected One Health Issues

Aflatoxin contamination of food is one of the main causes of stunted growth in children in some global regions. Pakistan has taken the regional lead to mitigate the aflatoxin issue in South Asia. USAID/USDA has joined hands with CABI to lead this new initiative in collaboration with the
National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC)
and
Rafhan Maize Products Co. Ltd

Right at the intersection of animals/humans/environment…. This study described how transmission routes for
Toxoplasma gondii
have varied by decade. In the 1960s and 1990s, toxoplasmosis outbreaks mainly occurred through ingestion of cysts in meat and meat derivatives; in the 1980s, through milk contaminated with tachyzoites; in 2000, due to the presence of oocysts in water, sand, and soil; and in 2010, due to oocysts in raw fruits and vegetables. The authors suggest that greater attention be paid to the disinfection of vegetables, as well as to the quality of water used for drinking and irrigation. https://bit.ly/3cL9GIy

HEAL is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation, the European Union, the Italian Cooperation, CGIAR and the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance and implemented by Vétérinaries Sans Frontières Switzerland (lead agency), Comitato Collaborazione Medica and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). It works in Oromia and Somali regions of Ethiopia, Marsabit County of Kenya, and Gedo Region of Somalia.
Carried out in Somali and Oromia regions from 3-9 December 2019 as a first step in the planning of both the HEAL and HEARD projects. The mapping exercise will be repeated in Kenya and Somalia over the coming months. https://bit.ly/352QAej

Evan Griffith is a DVM/MPH dual degree student at Tufts University. The One Health Framework harnesses existing service delivery structures in Turkana and sets up a coordination mechanism to implement One Health activities by means of mobile "One Health Huduma centres." This approach can improve access to public services, including human and animal health, drought management and disaster relief for Turkana pastoralists and can act as a model for improved service delivery to pastoralists in the Greater Horn of Africa and beyond. https://bit.ly/2Y9bdUy

Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) jointly with Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
The advertised working area has a focus on agriculture/nutrition, but is intentionally very broad as we actually hope to find several scientists. One position will be mainly based at Charité in Berlin and a further 1-2 mainly at PIK in Potsdam. Applications Deadline May 15th.
Applications due May 15, 2020 for PhD programs to begin September 2020. New projects include Empowering antibiotics using host defence peptide to fight antimicrobial resistance in respiratory infections, Development of multibiomarker Point-of-Care test for detection of bovine TB, and Rapid identification of pathogens utilising MinION technology. Students will be registered for their degree at one or other host institution, and projects will involve at least one supervisor from each organisation.
