I hope this message finds you and your family safe and well!

As we move into another week of distance learning, we want to continue emphasizing the need to keep our community well-informed and connected!  And while we are still coming to terms with the extended school dismissal through the end of the year, we are also inspired by the countless acts of kindness, generosity, humanity and dedication that we observe on a daily basis.

Continue reading below for more information on how special it is to be a part of this school community!  And, thank you for your ongoing commitment to taking care of each other, as we continue working through this very difficult and unique time!

With gratitude,

Mark Johnson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

CONNECT: A New Kind of Open House
A New Kind of Open House
A New Kind of Open House

We are excited to share a look into the class spaces your families have set up at home.  The desk may be different and your students have swapped classmates for siblings, but the dedication to connecting with one another remains the same.  Thank you to our fantastic teachers for their commitment to reaching our students from afar.  And thank you to our families for your support of your student's success with distance learning.

We will continue to celebrate all of the ways that your students are still being creative and caring while away from school.  If you have videos or photos of your students learning while at home, your family spending time together in new ways, or any moment that brings a smile to your face, share it with us.  Email your videos and photos to [email protected] While this may feel like a new world, thriving through challenge is a part of our District's history, and truly #TheFVSDWay.
SPOTLIGHT: Courreges Principal, Chris Christensen, Named State Elementary Principal of the Year

It is with great excitement that we share Principal of Courreges Elementary School, Chris Christensen, has been named as the Elementary Principal for the Year for the entire State of California by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA)!  This is a tremendous distinction of merit, as there are almost 6,000 elementary schools in the state.  We are all thrilled for Chris, who sees himself as the school's facilitator, lead-learner and greatest cheerleader.  In addition, when it comes to building school culture and community, Chris is second to none.   He is loved by students, staff, parents, and community alike for the energy, enthusiasm, creativity, and dedication he brings to any campus he leads.

When asked about receiving the award, Mr. C shared, "I am truly honored and thrilled to be selected as the 2020 State ACSA Elementary Principal of the Year! I have been blessed to work with such an amazing school community and supportive school district team within the Fountain Valley School District.  I graciously accept this honor on behalf of Courreges Elementary School and its dynamic students, gifted teachers, dedicated staff, highly supportive families, and connected school community."

Please join us in congratulating Mr. C on this very deserving award!  He will be honored at a dinner with other state award recipients in San Diego this fall.
FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS: Art at Home
LUNCH DOODLES with Mo Willems! Episode 01
LUNCH DOODLES with Mo Willems! Episode 01

With social distancing, comes a great number of artists at home.  And, like many celebrities, several illustrators and authors are turning to Instagram and other platforms to connect with kids while campuses across the country are dismissed.   Graphic journalist and illustrator Wendy MacNaughton hosts a  live, 30-minute online drawing class  for children, Mondays through Fridays at 10AM.  Similarly, Kennedy Center Artist in Residence at Home, Mo Willems presents online Lunch Doodles.  He also shares additional artists, including children's author and artist, Oliver Jeffers, hosting weekly storytime on Instagram live at 11AM.  In addition, children's author, Mac Barnett hosts Mac's Book Club Show on the platform.  And musicians like John Legend, Pink and Chris Martin of Coldplay have all performed virtual concerts.

As we all attempt to connect where we can, these artists offer our students and parents alike a daily distraction, entertainment, and more so, a chance to reach out through art.

Talking to kids abut coronavirus

The outbreak of COVID-19 can result in stress, especially for students who may be struggling to process fear and anxiety related to the virus.  FVSD's Support Services team of School Counselors and School Psychologists has compiled information on our site which may be helpful for students and families.  Included are resources for talking to students about COVID-19 and coping with stress.  Moreover, links and information on FVSD's mental health and wellness resources including CareSolace, Outreach Concern and our middle school counselors is available.  Lastly, there are a number of community healthy partners and emergency resources included for our families.  For all of our mental health and wellness resources, please visit our site here.
HIGHLIGHT: Student Meal Program in FVSD
Meal Pickup

Meal distribution for students takes place Monday through Friday from 12PM-1PM at Cox, Oka and Tamura Schools.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided. This program will be solely for the pickup of meals and meals will not be consumed on site. We encourage families to continue to be proactive in reducing the risk of COVID-19 by not congregating at the school site once meals have been distributed.  In addition, continue to wash your hands often, sneeze or cough into a tissue and stay at home if you are sick.  For more information, please click here
