The Word from the Friends:

Happy May! Thank you so much for your ongoing support of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries. I am very grateful for this community and the unique opportunity to lead the Friends as we continue out of the pandemic and through a very exciting time for our local libraries! We hear that the libraries are opening this month for modified browsing. Who would have thought that the promise of modified browsing could ever provide such a pleasant tingle of anticipation? Meanwhile, your generous donations in combination with Measure S funds are making renovations and enhancements at our branches possible. Stay tuned for more details! Meanwhile, enjoy the reopening of the Capitola Branch Library, enjoy La Selva Beach if you haven’t seen it yet, and look forward to Boulder Creek’s reopening later this year!

April saw some shifts on our Board of Directors as longtime Director, one-time Treasurer, and Aptos Representative Virginia Morris, known affectionately as Ginny, retired from the Board. We are glad that she plans to stay active in the Aptos Chapter. We are very happy to welcome Debby Peronto as our new Aptos Representative. Meanwhile, in Aptos, Gale Farthing has stepped up to take Debby’s former position as President of the Aptos Chapter. Welcome, Gale. Welcome, Debby. We’re also sorry to see Laura Landreth, our Scotts Valley Representative, retire from the Board as well, and we’re very happy that she’s staying active in the Scotts Valley Chapter. We’re pleased to welcome Scotts Valley Chapter Treasurer Marc Winquist to represent Scotts Valley on the Board. We thank Ginny and Laura for their service! Welcome, Marc!

Thanks for reading our newsletter, and thank you very much for all you do and give to the Library system. I look forward to the time we can all get together safely and share stories and books and love of community with each other in person.
Bruce Cotter, Executive Director
Welcome to the Board: Deborah Peronto
This month, we are thrilled to welcome Debby Peronto onto our board.

Debby, who worked for Texas Instruments, is a founding member of the Aptos Friends Chapter and served with them for the past six years. Debby's love of the libraries started at six years old when she and her mother would bike an hour each way to their local library.

Debby is looking forward to the new branch remodels currently underway - including her hometown Aptos chapter where she is particularly excited about the new children's room that is conjoined with the library's garden. Her current favorite book is The Death and Life of Monterey Bay.
Chapter Updates

We're pleased to say that this month, in accordance with CDC guidelines, many Santa Cruz Public Library branches, such as La Selva Beach, Felton, Live Oak, and Scotts Valley, will be reopening for in-person patron use, with some guidelines. Please check santacruzpl.org throughout the month for updates as they come.
Aptos

The Our Community Reads team has started reading in preparation for the 2022 season. The team is always happy to receive suggestions.

Plans are underway for closure of the Aptos branch in June, including return of modified book sales, selling current furnishings, and a book return offsite (pictured) when the branch is closed.

If you shop at Deluxe Market in Aptos, please mention the Aptos Friends when you check out. The Friends receive 5% of your purchase. Thanks for your generosity, Deluxe!
Capitola

The Friends of the Capitola Library bookstore in the Capitola mall is a busy place. We have thousands of books, DVDs, and CDs as well as many games and puzzles. As the health of our community has improved, some of our volunteers have been returning to help keep the store open. The bookstore is now open:

Wednesdays 12:00 - 6:00
Saturdays 11:00 - 4:00
Sundays 1:00 - 4:00.

We are also sometimes open Friday afternoons and may soon be open for a few hours on Monday afternoons. Watch for our open hours signs to go up in the bookstore windows.

The construction of the new library is almost complete. Soon the City of Capitola will hand the building over to library staff to turn a building into a library for the whole community. Watch for information about the Capitola Library grand opening celebration which is currently scheduled for June 12.
Felton

Saturday, May 8, 10 am-2 pm. Art Hike to Heal: Let Love Grow

County Park Friends invites fire survivors to come out for Opening Day of a new Art Hike dedicated to Fire Survivors at Felton Discovery Park. Along the Gushee Street portion of the loop, attendees will view an installation of photographs by fire survivor Devi Pride and quotes from other survivors. The one-way park path will feature a Storybook Walk, engaging families in a self-directed progression through the pages of the children’s book The Hike by Allison Farrell.

This first Storybook Walk is a collaboration between Felton Library Friends, County Park Friends, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, and Santa Cruz County Parks. On Opening Day, tables outside the Felton Branch Library will offer Seed Bombs to take and toss. Kids will receive a nature sketchbook while supplies last. Multiple organizations from the Long Term Recovery Group offer the latest in recovery support. The outdoor installations are available to the general public to view over the next several weeks. All necessary COVID protocols will be in place. Please bring your mask.
La Selva Beach
Beginning this week, patrons can now browse the collection of books in the reopened La Selva Beach Branch. Patrons inside the library must still wear masks and are subject to a capacity limit, but you can use the computers for a 45 minute session and snoop along the shelves. It's a great reason to come see the LSB Library!
