With the ever-evolving COVID virus, extreme heat days, and fears of other growing viral outbreaks infections, we must take care of our health, and remain stewards of our communities and the environment.

Green Sustainable Business Spotlight

"Growing the local food movement in Miami-Dade since 2008. Making Fresh Local Food Accessible & Available to All."

Urban Oasis Project is a local nonprofit focused on making good, clean, healthy food accessible to all. Urban Oasis Project runs farmers' markets, plants gardens with low-income families, and supports many local farms by bringing their produce to markets.

Urban Oasis Project is also able to accept SNAP benefits and even double their value. They also support local health centers.

"Founded by CEO, Asha Walker in 2013, Health in the Hood set out to connect communities to wellness with a simple idea - local vegetable gardens to feed, engage and empower communities in need."

Health in the Hood is a local urban vegetable garden nonprofit that focuses on creating local food ecosystems to make healthy eating attainable, sustainable, and fun!

Health in the Hood's programs includes nine urban farms, healthy living workshops, and a mobile produce pantry.
Environmental stewardship includes supporting our local sustainable businesses.

Combating Food Insecurity with Culinary Medicine
Food Insecurity:

  • Food Swamps- An area where fast food, junk food, convenience stores, and liquor stores outnumber healthy food options.
  • Food Deserts- An area with little access to affordable, nutritious food.
Culinary Medicine

  • "An educational and nutritional approach to improving eating behaviors." (Source: Harvard.edu)
  • Considers the importance of how food is produced, and the methods of food production.
  • Factors in the effects of how we cook our food, and health concerns about how our food is produced.
  • Focuses on the food experience of the individual (it's unique to you!).

Register for the Green Schools Challenge
The Green Schools Challenge provides free online sustainability curriculum aligned with state standards, professional development training for all teachers enrolled, STEAM designation and grants of up to $350 for schools to implement green initiatives. Participation in the Green Schools Challenge is voluntary but will give both students and teachers access to special incentives including grants and access to lessons and opportunities developed with partners including the Ocean Conservancy, the National Wildlife Federation, Miami Dade College Live Arts, FIU, Solar United Neighbors, and more.
