Youth Formerly in Foster Care Help Create Federal Foster Care Transition Toolkit |
Being a youth in foster care can be difficult. Some youth in foster care often experience trauma before entering into the foster care system. Once youth enter foster care, there are often a lack of sufficient role models and resources are either scarce or spread out. Gaining access to information about even the simplest things, like opening a bank account, can be a real hurdle. That’s why the recently released Foster Care Transition Toolkit (PDF, 66 pages) is so important.
The toolkit was first envisioned in 2015 at a roundtable at Cincinnati Community College. During this meeting, students from the Columbus State Community College Scholar Network (link is external) urged the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and other agencies to help them and other youth in foster care across the country better transition to college, successfully navigate through college, and then to a career.
This toolkit, developed in coordination across the executive branch, was designed with constant feedback from youth in foster care and stakeholders from across the country to inspire current and former youth in foster care to pursue college and career opportunities. The toolkit includes tips and resources intended to help youth in foster care access and navigate social, emotional, educational and resource barriers as they transition into adulthood.

136 CASA volunteers served 284 children in April and helped find safe, permanent homes for 9 of those children.
131 children are still waiting for someone to be their voice.

This school year has been especially challenging for students. Our CASA children often have extra challenges on top of the issues caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic. It is especially important for CASA Volunteers to obtain final grades, testing scores, and get updates from teachers to evaluate and monitor academic progress.

Remember to keep your CASA Volunteer file up-to-date with your current
auto insurance card, driver's license, and contact information.
And remember to visit your CASA child face-to-face at least once a month.

In April, the Children's Advocacy Center provided advocacy and forensic interviews to 58 children.
In the River Region, 19 children and families were provided 55 hours of counseling.

Dive into Safe Summer Fun
Nearly 300 children under five years old drown in swimming pools each year. In addition, nearly 4,000 children younger than five are hospitalized due to submersion injuries in pools. It is important all adults and children understand water safety to better enjoy summer activities, especially with everyone being home and looking for more fun outdoor activities to get out of the house. Families can work together to adopt and practice safety steps around the water. Establishing these simple water safety steps will save a life!

Stewards of Children Training
Stewards of Children is a revolutionary sexual abuse prevention training program that educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The program believes and teaches that child safety is an adult's job.
This training is offered using a virtual platform at $10 per participant. Your $10 includes a workbook, personal resources for better protecting children, CEU Certificate for 2.0 hours, and sustains this training for others to be trained.

In 2020, Child Advocacy Services CASA Program served 516 children with 198 volunteers dedicating over 7,564 hours. The CAC Program provided 614 forensic interviews and 457 hours of counseling to children and families.
