Winter VolunteerFest is coming to a Zoom near you this Friday!
Friday, January 29, 2021, 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. EST (with breaks) on Zoom

VolunteerFest is your introduction or reconnection to volunteering and community service at Brandeis! Come to explore opportunities to engage in your community, participate in a virtual service activity with Waltham Group's very own Brandeis Buddies, connect with fellow students who are passionate about service, and attend Waltham the More You Know, a fun and engaging introduction to the city of Waltham.  All student participants can log their volunteer hours in the Commitment to Service Award Program. This event is a part of Mid-year Orientation, but we welcome all fall semester first year students and any upper class students who are hoping to get more involved.  RSVP here to attend! Contact Colby Sim, csim@brandeis.edu, with any questions.
Winter 2021 Virtual Involvement Fair
Sunday, January 31, 2021
10 a.m.–11:30 a.m. AND 6 p.m.– 7:30 p.m. EST
Zoom links will be posted in Presence.

The Winter Involvement Fair is an annual event, sponsored by the Department of Student Activities, where representatives from student clubs and organizations at Brandeis can come together to recruit new members and advertise upcoming involvement opportunities on campus and online. This year's fair is virtual and available at two times so that we can reach students in different time zones.

Attend the Winter Involvement Fair by logging into Presence Events (using Brandeis credentials), searching through the clubs' event listings, and then joining the clubs' Zoom meetings. Ask questions about the clubs, learn more about their signature programs and events, and find out how often and when meetings take place. Visit as many clubs as you want! And, be sure you get on their mailing lists!
Community Partner Opportunities
Mentor in METCO, Inc.'s Homework Club!
METCO (the nation’s largest voluntary school desegregation program) is seeking college students to provide one-on-one academic mentorship and skill-building for scholars in grades 3-5. Academic mentors provide live homework support via Zoom twice a week for 45-minutes or once a week for 90-minutes. Whether mentees are attending school in-person, participating in a hybrid model, or distance learning from home during a pandemic, academic mentors provide extra support, both academic and emotional, by helping current METCO students develop strong organizational skills, stay on top of their work, and meet deadlines. Mentor in METCO's Homework Club today!
The Sesa Wo Suban Project is recruiting college admission mentors!
The Sesa Wo Suban Project brings college mentoring and culturally relevant pedagogy to Black students in Metro Atlanta by transforming at-risk students into agents of change who push for liberation in their communities. We are in desperate need of 15 undergraduate volunteers who are interested in supporting and assisting marginalized youth with their college admission journeys. Please email loganshanks@brandeis.edu if interested or fill out this form.
COVID 19 Memorial Day
Lyle Benjamin, Author and Founder of the volunteer non-profit organization, Planned Acts of Kindness (PlannedActs.Org), has written the book “Legacy Lifelines: Memorial” designed to be given away for free to every family — in the world — that has lost a family member due to COVID-19. If you wish to volunteer, donate, or learn about the initiatives of Benjamin’s NPO, visit www.plannedacts.org or contact Lyle Benjamin (917-683-2625), support@plannedActs.org and if you or someone you know someone that has passed in the last year, go to LegacyLineClubs.Com to register for the free book."
Volunteer at REACH
Are you interested in helping survivors and information seekers in a virtual space? With the support of staff and peers, volunteers are able to have conversations in the safety of their home, while feeling connected to the organization and the community. This role is a virtual afternoon/evening position.

For more information, or to apply, visit the REACH website.
Real Talk Presents: Author Jennifer De Leon
Real Talk Presents Author Jennifer De Leon
Monday, January 25 at 6 PM
Streaming live on YouTube at bit.ly/realtalkdeleon

Our Real Talk teen leaders with the support of the WHS Book Club will be hosting a conversation with local author Jennifer De Leon. Her novel Don't Ask Me Where I'm From tells the story of Liliana Cruz, a Boston teen from an immigrant family who is accepted into the METCO program—and the challenges she faces as she is forced to confront racism at her new suburban school.

The event will be streamed live on YouTube with our teens engaging the author in conversation. Attendees won't be visible or audible but they will be able to comment and ask questions of the author.
Apply to the Millennium Fellowship
The United Nations Academic Impact and MCN proudly present the Millennium Fellowship. This program convenes, challenges, and celebrates bold student leadership advancing the Sustainable Development Goals on campus and in communities. As a Millennium Fellow, you will hone skills, take concrete action, and earn a certificate of recognition from United Nations Academic Impact and MCN. There is no cost for selected students. Undergraduate leaders should apply as soon as possible (rolling admissions through April 30th, Class of 2021 will run August-December 2021).
Support Needed for the Waltham Armory Project
WATCH is mobilizing support for a proposal to convert the abandoned Waltham Armory building into twenty-three affordable rental units. We would love Brandeis University Department of Community Services support for this project.

There are several ways to show support (choose the one that works for you)
*Please note that the Department of Community Service provides marketing and may not be in direct partnership with this organization, student group or department. It is the responsibility of all members of this listserv to research all internal and external community engagement initiatives and programs prior to involvement.
