Time is a funny thing. Twelve weeks ago we were faced with a task that seemed impossible, and those first few days felt like months. The months felt like an eternity. And now suddenly here we are at the end of the academic year, preparing our graduating students for the very first virtual commencement and to enter a changed world.
While we have much to be proud of and continue to learn what is best for our students, our colleagues across the university, and even for our own research, the reality of what challenges are ahead sinks in. Perhaps most pressing is the economic situation the entire University of California public education system finds itself facing.
It is encouraging, in the middle of this bad financial news, to see staff and faculty coming together to actively find ways to mitigate the impacts across our division, while discovering creative ways to continue our work. We will continue, and our students will receive the excellence they deserve from our institution.
As the end of the quarter leads to summer, there is much to do and much to learn. Please keep yourself informed, ask questions and voice your ideas and experiences, for we know that our division gains strength in being connected to one another.
