Long Beach City College Alumni Newsletter
March 2020

Message from the Assistant Director,
Alumni Development

We will get through this together.  It's what we do.

Greetings Viking Family,

We hope that you and your loved ones are staying safe and well during this challenging time.  These most unusual times of social distancing and "safer at home" are certainly stretching our imagination in terms of developing creative ways to help and serve each other - loved ones, neighbors, workplace colleagues, community members and, yes, even our alma mater  - to stay strong, safe, sane, serene and sustainable.

Our March newsletter is filled with information about what is currently going on at LBCC.  Events have been postponed and the College and our community partners are looking at new ways to support our students and our neighbors. As you will see below, we have news about the postponement of our Golf Tournament, extension for Hall of Fame Nominations, and information about the new construction for athletics.  Amidst the turmoil, Viking students and alumni are being recognized for their scholarship and work in the community.  The Viking spirit is strong!

As for the Foundation our focus has been on supporting LBCC students as they move to online instruction while our office transitions to working from home.  Our main goal has been raising funds to help our students with their additional needs as they navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please read the message from Paul Kaminski, our Executive Director,  that gives details about the Student Emergency Fund set up to support our students in the areas of housing, food, technology, transportation, and mental health.

Over 25,000 Viking students are being impacted by COVID-19, especially our most vulnerable first-generation and low-income students.

Today our Board of Governors has generously offered to match the first $10,000 we raise for this fund.

Please consider giving today and doubling your impact!

Together we can make a difference in our students' lives.

Be Well Viking Family,

A Message from our Executive Director

To Our Valued Partners,

We wanted to keep you in the loop with regards to Long Beach City College and The Long Beach City College Foundation's actions with regards to COVID-19.

As of Tuesday, March 17, 2020, both campuses of LBCC are closed. Instruction has been moved online. All staff and administrators have begun working remotely as well. In accordance with these requirements, The Long Beach City College Foundation team is working remotely until June 8, 2020.

As our students and faculty transition to online instruction, the need for support and flexibility will be critical. At The LBCC Foundation, we are working hard to meet the evolving needs of our programs as they continue to develop. Additionally, we are working closely with the scholarship office to support over 900 LBCC students that applied for scholarships this year.

As always, The Long Beach City College Foundation is committed to raising funds to support Long Beach City College's outstanding and ever-evolving learning environment.

We ask that you continue to support us in this mission by making a contribution to the Student Emergency Fund. This fund offers necessary assistance to students otherwise unable to complete their studies this semester by assisting with computer needs, providing internet access, and through scholarship support. Long Beach City College serves as a gateway to the future for our diverse community - together we can ensure that path stays open for our students.

VIKING STUDENTS SECLECTED AS COOKE SCHOLARSHIP FINALISTS

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation recently announced the semifinalists for its highly selective Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, two of which are Long Beach City College students.

Samantha Oboro and Emily Thompson are among this year's 456 semifinalists who were chosen from a pool of nearly 1,500 applicants attending 311 community colleges in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Through this award, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation supports high-achieving community college students as they transfer to some of the best four-year institutions in the country to complete their bachelor's degrees.

"Year after year, we are impressed by the incredible talent and resolve of community college students," said Seppy Basili, executive director of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. "We are proud to recognize this outstanding group of semifinalists for their academic achievement."

The Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship recipients will be announced in April. Selected scholars will receive financial support for up to three years, comprehensive educational advising, and the chance to connect with fellow Cooke Scholars.

Cooke Transfer Scholars are selected based on their exceptional academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, service to others, and leadership. Students must be currently enrolled in a community college or recent graduates residing in the United States.

Four LBCC students have captured the coveted award over the past decade, including Lara Meintjes who transferred to Williams College with a full scholarship last year.
LBCC Alumna Honored
70th District Women of Distinction

"It is an honor to celebrate the great women of AD 70 each year.  As a parent and a teacher, I value the contributions of the women in our lives who serve as community leaders, volunteers, business owners, and heads of families."

-Patrick O'Donnell, Assemblymember, 70th District

Assemblymember Patrick O'Donnell hosts his annual Women of Distinction event every February during Women's History Month.  This award is presented in recognition of women of the 70th Assembly District who go above and beyond for our community. Honorees are nominated in one of five categories - Arts, Business, Community Service, Education, and Health Services - and selected by Assemblymember O'Donnell for their extraordinary achievements.

This year, one of our distinguished LBCC Alumni, Jan Hall Zolin, has been recognized by Assemblymember O'Donnell for her efforts. Jan is a Hall of Fame recipient and a longtime supporter of the LBCC Foundation.  Here is what Assemblymember O'Donnell had to say:

Jan Hall Zolin has been a tireless leader for the Long Beach community, Southern California and the State of California. She served as a strong leader and Long Beach councilwoman for 12 years. She also was the first woman to be elected as president of the Southern California Rapid Transit District. Continuing in the transportation field, Zolin went on to serve as a board member with Californians for Transportation and then became director of the Southern California Department of Commerce. She was inducted into the Long Beach Community College Hall of Fame in 1984. Zolin continues to be involved in local community issues.

Congratulations Jan!!

A Message About
37th Annual LBCC Foundation  Athletics Golf Tournamen t
Dear Loyal Viking Athletics Golf Tournament Participants,

The COVID-19 spread has certainly affected and disrupted our lives in negative and positive ways.   Our routines have been altered while change, flexibility and adaptability have become the order of the day.   During this time, we all have had the opportunity to reflect on what is important to us and spend more time connecting with our families.

In an effort to follow public health guidelines and protect everyone from the spread of COVID-19, we have cancelled the 37th Annual LBCC Foundation Athletics Associates Golf Tournament, which was to be held May 18th at Sky Links Golf Course.  We will be back next year to honor Gary Anderson and look forward to celebrating his accomplishments and reuniting with you, our most loyal supporters.

We are saddened by the need to cancel this event, but the needs of our student-athletes will not diminish next year. The main reason for the tournament's existence is its' ability to raise approximately $30,000 annually which goes directly to enhance our athletes' experience.  I know there are other reasons that you play, including socializing and connecting with friends and colleagues, the camaraderie during dinner, the golf and awards and receiving the tee prize.

I would like to ask you to consider donating to our Athletics program in lieu of playing.  Of the $250 entry fee to play, approximately $125 goes directly to the Athletics program.  By making the $125 donation and not playing in the golf tournament, here are the benefits that you will receive: a $125 savings from the initial registration; up to 8 hours of free time; no frustrating, "want to throw your club" golf shots; no rubber chicken dinner; no cajoling to buy more raffle tickets or bid on prizes; and the satisfaction that you are helping create a great experience for our athletes.

You can go online to HERE to make your gift.  This year we will have:
  • more than 30 athletes receive scholarships to play their sport and further their education at a four-year institution.
  • athletes and coaches  who continue  our tradition of athletic success by winning championships
  • graduation rates and GPA's that far outpace that of the college
  • teams who give back to the community through our numerous service efforts.
WE DO GOOD WORK!

We ask for your support as we continue to shape and prepare these young people for a successful future.

Thank you and as always,

GO VIKINGS!

Construction for New Kinesiology and Athletics Complex Begins
Former LBCC Tennis Courts
Beginning Spring 2020, Long Beach City College will break ground on the new 70,000 sq. ft. Kinesiology Complex. This project will bring new and enhanced sports facilities for the Vikings sports teams and physical education programs.

"Eight of our 18 sports will be directly impacted with this new construction which provides attractive venues for practice and competition, but every one of our programs will be positively impacted."  said Interim Athletics Director Bill Husak.  "Construction is exciting and is a signal to all of the commitment to Athletics and the vitality of the College."

Westburg White Architecture (WWA) is working with Long Beach City College on the project as they start construction on the new aquatic center, sand volleyball courts, soccer and softball fields.  The construction will also result in two new buildings with home and visitor locker rooms, team rooms, administration offices, training rooms, shower facilities and meeting rooms.

WWA is excited about working on the project, "renovation and upgrading of the outdoor fields will provide enhanced and modernized sports facilities to meet the long terms needs of the physical education programs. The Aquatic Center will provide a modern, state-of-the-art complex to meet the needs of instructional programs as well as intercollegiate athletics. The center provides team rooms, coaching offices, athletic training spaces, as well as a large multi-purpose room for athletic and campus events. This project also provides shower and locker room facilities anticipating future renovation of existing facilities. The existing softball field will be relocated to a location adjacent to the existing baseball field to provide necessary space for the new tennis and soccer facilities."

Stay tuned for updates as the construction continues!

FUN WAYS TO CONNECT
WHILE YOU ARE AT HOME!
During this unprecedented time we wanted to offer you some fun ways to stay connected.  As we continue "social distancing", it is critical that our "distance" be purely physical.  Isolation can be lonely and can create a negative impact on well-being and health.  This challenge is easier when we find new ways of connecting, and we wanted to provide you with some resources to help you do that.
  1. Take an art class!  Artist Wendy MacNaughton is  holding daily art classes for all ages called #DRAWTOGETHER at 10 a.m. PST every day.
  2. Take a cooking class!  Chef's like Tyler Florence and Gordon Ramsay are giving online classes to the masses!
  3. Other chefs are also getting in on the game giving cooking classes and tips & tricks for how to make the most of your pantry.
  4. Here is a list of 25 things to keep you busy while at home!
  5. Virtual Yoga or other fitness classes .
  6. Organize a Neighborhood Social Distancing activity. Examples include: Bluff Park Clap Out, Teddy Bear Hunt (Stuffed Animals not real ones!)
  7. Check out Webcam Feeds, Livestreams or Virtual Tours

     8. Support our Vikings by giving to the Student Emergency Fund!

Do you have stories to share about how you are connecting in this new world?  Send them to [email protected] and I will share them in our next newsletter!

Cremation Services for retired colleague Tom Vu were held Sat. March 7, 2020 at Forest Lawn Long Beach.

Tom Vu began his Long Beach City College service in 1990 as an offset operator in the Duplicating Center at PCC. Through title changes from Offset Press Operator to Reprographics Technician, district reorganizations, and the challenges of an evolving industry, Tom devoted the next 28 years of his career to assisting anyone who walked through the PCC Reprographic doors until his retirement on June 30, 2018.

Long Beach City College is sad to inform you of the recent passing of retired colleague Patricia (Pat) A. Hicks.

Pat began working with the district as a student worker in 1999 before completing her studies and transferring to CSULB. An active and avid alumna, Pat continued to be a familiar and friendly face on campus in various capacities and assignments until her permanent hire with LBCC's Associated Student Body (ASB) Enterprises as the Volunteer Coordinator-Student Life in 2006. Due to reorganization, this position was eliminated, and Pat was hired into district employment as a Locker Room Attendant for the Women's Locker Room in 2009. Pat dedicated the remainder of her years of service to supporting our student-athletes and athletic programs until her retirement in 2018.

With no next of kin and limited finances, a GoFundMe account has been established to help settle her matters. All remaining funds will be donated to a student scholarship through the LBCC Foundation .

Details will be announced about a memorial celebration for the afternoon of Fri., April 24 at LAC.

Journalism Alumni Reunion Postponed

A NOTE FROM PAT MCKEAN

Dear LBCC Journalism friend,
Sadly, we will have to reschedule the May 8 reunion to a better time. The college will conduct only online classes until at least June 10. We will let you know when we can all gather safely. Thanks for understanding. Please help spread the
word and take care.     Pat McKean

The Long Beach City College Journalism Program will host a reunion Friday, May 8, to continue the historic tradition, reunite, show off the new area, give away plaques from decades gone by, further develop a mentorship program for current students and collect funds for a scholarship.

Current students, alumni, faculty and staff will gather in the newly renovated Journalism-English P Building, historic P113 Lounge, P135 high-tech journalism office, P134 computer lab and courtyard at
4901 E. Carson St., Long Beach.

The event begins at 5 pm. Light refreshments will be served.
A brief program will be presented at 6:30 and the reunion will conclude at 8 p.m.

Organizers are spreading the word to students from any class since the college opened in 1927, not just City magazine and Viking news. Former or current journalistic coworkers, professionals, colleagues and others who might be interested are also welcome to attend.

A Facebook page will further promote the event and participants are encouraged to use Twitter and other social media to reconnect with fellow alumni.
