Lincoln Park-Moyer Pool 100th Anniversary Celebration

The Lincoln Park-Moyer Pool was the first pool that opened in Grand Junction on June 8, 1922. To celebrate, on June 8, 2022, a special event was held. Community members received free entrance to the pool and free ice cream. Mayor, Anna Stout attended and provided special remarks regarding the Lincoln Park-Moyer Pool.  Throughout its 100-year history, the Lincoln Park-Moyer Pool has been enjoyed by thousands of Grand Valley residents. With 46,149 visits in 2021, at 101 days of operation, the pool averages 457 daily users. This also includes swim lessons, which are over 1,000 registrants each summer  Additionally, the pool has hosted several premiere swim meets, including the Western Zone Championships.

Special Olympics Returned

The Special Olympics returned on June 17, 18 and 19. Opening ceremonies were held at Suplizio Field with five hundred athletes from over 70 different teams that walked from first base to third base as fans cheered them on. Thousands of spectators watched the athletes compete in different games at Colorado Mesa University and Lincoln Park Stadium. Lincoln Park hosted the track and field games, while CMU held the swimming competition, power lifting as well as team-oriented events like soccer.

Red Carnation Society

What is the Red Carnation Society?? It is a newly formed society recognizing the best-of-the-best Grand Junction Parks and Recreation Aquatics professionals. William J. Moyer, who founded the Lincoln Park-Moyer Pool always wore a red carnation in his lapel. The red carnation pins are given to aquatics staff who embody commitment to aquatic safety, philanthropic nature and belief in the value of strong community, among many other qualities. When you visit our aquatics facilities, be on the lookout for staff members wearing a red carnation pin and wish them a hardy congratulations!

Bear Statue Ribbon Cutting

Attendees braved the rain to participate in the Bear Statue Ribbon Cutting on June 30, 2022. Former County Commissioner Kathy Hall connected the City with Gary and Lori Dean owners of the 4,500 lb. lava rock bear statue. The massive bear sculpture constructed of lava rock was built by artist John Kessler and stands 11’ tall. City staff worked with the Commission on Arts and Culture to determine an appropriate location for the bear and decided Lincoln Park was the best spot given its history as the former home of the city zoo.
