As June ends, we celebrate another National Homeownership Month.
The team at St. Ambrose strives to provide a pathway home and a springboard to a better life for our neighbors in the Baltimore region.
We’re proud to share that last year, 22,000 people became homeowners and 11,800 people were able to stay homeowners because of the collective effort of the NeighborWorks America network, of which St. Ambrose is a member.

NeighborWorks network members are spearheading efforts to increase equity in the homeownership arena. One such effort is described in “Homeownership Is Affordable Housing,” a white paper authored by Mike Loftin, in which he makes the case for increased usage of down payment assistance as a public sector strategy for affordable housing.
We know how important down payment and closing cost assistance is for would-be homeowners in the Baltimore region. “The biggest hurdle people face when buying a home is the upfront costs. Rapidly increasing interest rates and home prices have put homeownership even farther out of reach for many,” says Grace Parker, Senior Housing Counselor.
We are grateful for the support of donors and funders, like Truist Foundation, who break down this barrier to homeownership by providing funds to cover down payments and closing costs. Our housing counselors work with over 1,100 people each year, connecting them with down payment and closing cost assistance and providing support to those on the path to homeownership.

From the Archives

“Ms. Jones had been a renter for over 10 years and was somewhat afraid of taking the leap into homeownership.”

St. Ambrose has served neighbors in the Baltimore region since 1968. Take a peak back to the inspiring homeownership story of Ms. Jones.

Today, the Black homeownership rate is approximately 42% – 45%, essentially unchanged from the rate decades ago and widening over the last a few years.
