When Safer at Home, Isn't

During this time of necessary social distancing, domestic violence and elder abuse victims, as well as child abuse victims who now don't have school personnel to confide in, are all at increased danger due to home confinement with their abuser. As a way to gain power and control over victims, abusers may take advantage of an already stressful situation by withholding medical attention, taking away recommended safety measures such as hand sanitizer and/or cleaning products, or further isolating their victims by hindering their ability to interact with family and friends by phone or over the internet. If you are, or someone you know is, experiencing abuse, resources remain available during this time. You may contact the Fluvanna Victim/Witness Program at 591-1985 or email at sstader@fluvannacounty.org for support, information and referrals. Protective orders can still be obtained during this time. Additionally, the Shelter for Help in Emergency (SHE) will remain open and ready to serve victims of domestic violence. They can be reached on their 24-hour hotline at (434) 293-8509.  Of course, if you are in immediate danger, you should call 911 or contact the Fluvanna Sheriff's Office directly at 589-8211.
