Homelessness and the Pandemic: Our Christian Commitment to the Community

Thursday, January 28
3 p.m.

In March of last year, our world was turned upside down. The worst pandemic in over a century began raging globally. With lockdowns and stay-at-home orders, national economies went into free fall and economic hardship quickly followed. Many who led otherwise secure lives, suddenly found themselves without the means to support themselves and their families.

This precarious situation has led many finding themselves without a home or shelter for themselves or their family. This, in turn, has brought a renewed focus on the needs of those who find themselves without safe and adequate shelter. During this workshop, our panelists will discuss the current situation in the United States and the United Kingdom. Together, they will discuss our Christian responsibility to our sisters and brothers in these challenging times and offer ways that churches can most effectively support and engage.

Why an Endowment? Ensuring Parish Ministry for Future Generations

Wednesday, February 10
3 p.m.

Does your church have an endowment? Do you wonder why? Would you like to have an endowment? Do others in your church agree?

Join our panel to learn what an endowment is and how an endowment can ensure fiscal stability for current and future ministry. This digital workshop, intended for the new, the curious, and the confused. The panel will discuss basic endowment principles and preview detailed presentations on endowment oversight and investing that will take place in the Endowment Pre-Conference at the CEEP Network Annual Conference in March. This workshop will provide time for questions for the panel from attendees.

Inauguration, MLK Day offer Episcopalians opportunities to pray and engage
[Episcopal News Service] As Americans ready themselves to welcome their 46th president, Episcopalians are invited to participate in a variety of virtual inaugural and Martin Luther King Jr. Day events.

Washington National Cathedral is expected to host an inaugural prayer service on Jan. 21, as is traditional. While previous presidential inaugurations have included packed, festive services at the cathedral, the format – like the rest of the inaugural events – is expected to be scaled back and to include virtual elements. More details will be available in the coming days at cathedral.org.

The inaugural prayer services highlight the role that people of faith play in a democratic society, and Episcopalians have many opportunities to continue reflecting and acting on that responsibility in the coming days and weeks, said the Rev. Charles Robertson, canon to the presiding bishop for ministry beyond The Episcopal Church.

“From the beginnings of our country, while we have had a separation of church and state, faith communities have been integral in working with governments on any number of projects and programs,” Robertson told Episcopal News Service. “And The Episcopal Church in particular, from the start, has taken seriously our responsibility to do what we can. And never is that more important than in a time of transition.”

Lawrence Home Association’s Academic Grant for Minority Women program
The Lawrence Home Association, founded in 1896 under the will of philanthropist Eleanor Earnshaw, was started to “provide a Christian home for self-supporting, young women on limited means, the most important aim being to help them elevate their standard of life.” To this day, the Lawrence Home Association provides opportunities for young women.

An eight-member board of women, appointed by the bishop, meets once a year to vote on recommendations for academic grants for minority women, scholarships for clergy daughters and funding for social-service agencies whose mission is to serve women of limited means and help them move out of conditions related to poverty, abuse, etc.

The purpose of the Academic Grant for Minority Women program is to help finance the postsecondary education of minority women, regardless of age, who are affiliated with an Episcopal church within the Diocese of Southern Ohio.

The association expects to make eight grants in 2021. The application deadline is March 15, 2021. All applicants for the 2021-22 grant period will be selected by April 15, 2021, and notified by May 15 about the status of their applications. To obtain an application, go online to https://episcopaliansinconnection.org/financial-assistance-2/
