Luke 11:1-13

"Everyone Who Searches"

Rev. Dr. Charles Kutz-Marks

A Message From Our Visiting Minister

How is it that God uses our prayers - often as unsophisticated and self-centered as our thoughts and yearnings are- to build lives and communities that are rich and fulfilling? God opens the way through prayer.

About Rev. Dr. Kutz-Marks

The Rev. Dr. Charles Kutz-Marks, or Chuck as he prefers to be called, was born in New Orleans, but grew up in Ocala, Florida.

Chuck received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University. He then attended seminary at Chicago Theological Seminary in Chicago earning his Master of Divinity degree. There he met Becca Kutz who would join him in marriage in 1979. Later he earned a Doctor of Ministry from Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit.

In December of 2005, he began serving as Sr. Minister of University Christian Church in Austin where he is still an active member. In 2019, he retired from full time pastoral ministry.

Chuck’s outside of church interests include: cooking, astronomy (a member of the Austin Astronomical Society), amateur radio, raised-bed vegetable gardening, Texas history, and travel trailering.

Chuck and Becca have two children, David and Marie, and five grandchildren.

Hospitality

Behaving hospitably is very consistent with our role as Christians. I want to share about hospitality I received from Solomon and Meaza Habtemarium. Week before last I called to request a visit with them and had to ask them to keep Thursday afternoon open for a visit.

Thursday Meaza called me just as I was about to call her to verify that I would be coming. She carefully texted excellent directions for me and, when I arrived, she waved from their balcony, then came down to escort me to their apartment. Solomon greeted me with a warm hug.

Consistent with Leviticus 19:34, Meaza showed herself to be a lovely hostess, providing first a bottle of cold water. After a bit she asked whether I care for watermelon. I do, so she served each of us a good portion. She did note that she would normally offer me a cup of either coffee or tea, but with our current temperatures she thought not. I agreed.

Solomon spoke at length of their background and I learned so much. Woven throughout all conversation the love of God each holds came through over and over. Titus 1:8 is embodied there.

Knowing that they don’t take communion every week, and not wanting to be disrespectful, I explained that, because they don’t often get to worship with us, I was prepared to offer the Lord’s Supper. I learned that their faithful habit is to prepare for communion by reconciling themselves to God and that they had done so. So it was my great privilege to share the feast prepared by our Savior himself with them. What a gift.

After a bit more conversation, as I was preparing to leave, Meaza brought out and gave me a large piece of a traditional bread which she had made. It had a decoration formed into the top of the loaf. Then she walked me all the way out to my car.

I hope to be able to make any guest in my home feel as w

elcome as I did in theirs. Doing so is the work of the Lord.

RRCC Chalice Car Decals

Some people are opposed to wearing advertising and won't wear t-shirts with company logos emblazoned across the chest. But some of those same people will wear clothing which shows off their alma mater or they'll wear a football jersey reflecting their favorite team. Some attempt to show their Christianity by wearing crosses.

We have an opportunity to share about our church. Note the high percentage of "scantily clad" vehicles in our parking lot on Sunday morning. I'm speaking of those not sporting RRCC decals.

Should you want to insure that your car is "well-dressed", pick up a decal from the counter in the welcome center and add $2.00 or more to your offering. We could have quite a fleet of RRCC vehicles roaming around, helping us to spread the word that RRCC is a good place to engage in practicing our faith. Come, be a part of it.

Hopewell Middle School Supply Drive

The 2022-2023 school year is just around the corner, and, as in the past, the Hopewell Principal (Lynda Garinger) has requested the continued support of RRCC in providing much needed student school supplies, to begin the school year.

Although we do have a budget for Outreach to spend on events and supplies, we are providing an opportunity for additional donations, should anyone be interested in contributing to this worthy cause.  In the five years since we began this project in 2017, we have donated school supplies valued at over $2,700 to the students at Hopewell who need supplies.

Please consider making a contribution to this project with a check or online contribution marked (Hopewell School Supplies) during any week in July. Thank you for your help in supporting the students of Hopewell Middle School, with school supplies, in our on-going effort to "embrace our neighbors with Christ-like love"!

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

A Stairway to Heaven

When Jacob arrives at Bethel, he is a broken young man. Supposedly he has inherited the covenant blessings from his father: the promise that God will be with him, give him a great name, and make him a blessing to all nations (see Genesis 12:1-3; 28:3-4). But as he goes to sleep that night, he is alone and discredited—hardly a candidate to bless anyone, much less all peoples on earth.

But that night, in his dreams, Jacob catches a surprising glimpse of the God who has far more in store for him than he has ever understood. The text points out that this occurred in “a certain place,” so this was not some imaginary or dreamed-up location. And here, in this ordinary place on the earth, Jacob sees a stairway reaching from earth to heaven, an open passageway to God. And God assures Jacob that all of his covenant promises will be fulfilled.

Has God ever met you in an ordinary, unexpected place? Sometimes we, like Jacob, imagine that we need to work harder, feel more holy, or storm heaven to seize God’s promises. And, like Jacob, we find that our efforts leave us broken and alone.

But God reminds us that we don’t need to build a stairway to get to heaven. In Jesus, he has constructed a way for broken people to return to him (see John 1:51) Will you let God surprise you with his grace today?
