Walnut Bend Lane Closure As
Street Replacement Work Begins 

Road demolition of Walnut Bend will be in progress for three months.


This past Monday Harper Brothers Construction began demolishing Walnut Bend Lane between Westpark and Wilcrest Green. As a result of this work, Walnut Bend is now restricted to southbound traffic only for the next three months. Northbound traffic will be detoured to Wilcrest or Rogerdale. 

The work is part of the District's largest ever capital improvement project. Workers are rebuilding near 6,000 feet of the roadway between Westpark Drive and Westheimer Road. The project scope includes features that the community will enjoy including enhanced sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, dedicated bike lanes, custom bus shelters, bike racks and extensive landscaping.

EHRA Engineering Hosts Blood Drive



Donations for blood are more important than ever. That's why  EHRA Engineering is hosting a blood drive today from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. While no walk-up donors will be allowed, you can schedule an appointment to donate. Appointments are spaced 15 minutes apart to allow for social distancing and sanitization between appointments.

Dive in to Summer Fun with Camp Quillian, 
Pool Parties and Youth Basketball Registration


Serving children ages 5-12 and teens ages 13-14, Camp Quillian is open for registration. Activities include swimming, arts and crafts, rock climbing, guest speakers, special events, ice cream socials, basketball, soccer, Vacation Bible School and more.

Locals Flocking to Farmers Market


Swaggr sells Mother Earth-friendly socks.
The Westchase District Farmers Market has experienced an uptick in foot traffic and shoppers since the COVID crisis.

The market has added new vendors and welcomed back previous ones.  Swaggr set up to sell performance athletic socks made from recycled plastic bottles that were polluting the ocean. Avila Flavors and Experiences joined the market's prepared foods line up with beef and chicken empanadas. A former chef segued into coffee to found Inconceivable Coffee Roasters and introduce market goers to his blends.

Mondaze Mini Donuts' donut machine caught market goers' attention as freshly made donuts cooked before their eyes.

Erbe Ranch brought fresh pasta, goat cheese and freshly-caught gulf shrimp. Erbe returned after experiencing a huge demand in beef orders at its ranch store. In lieu of the shortage, the farmer added more pork and chicken to his market freezer.

 

Westchase District Team Volunteers at WHAM

Lending a hand: Gilkeson loads up food 28 seconds at a time.
Dave Gilkeson, chief operating officer and vice president for Westchase District, was one of four Westchase District staff members to see the economic effect of the COVID crisis up close when the group volunteered at West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) last week.

With the help of the men and women of the National Guard, Gilkeson and his team distributed food to 2,000 people in approximately 428 cars.

Since the outbreak, the volume of people turning to WHAM has substantially increased. WHAM holds the distribution events three days a week as a long line of cars have become a familiar sight on Meadowglen, Rogerdale and Westheimer.

"I felt very blessed for two reasons," said Gilkeson. "First, that my family has been minimally impacted by this pandemic and that serving our community and meeting their needs is very satisfying and a blessing. I am a numbers guy - we served a family every 28 seconds with no time for rest. It is rewarding to know the difference volunteering can make."

Royal Oaks of Westchase Becomes Apex of Royal Oaks

Located at 11212 Westpark Drive, Royal Oaks of Westchase was one of three recent acquisitions by Lynd Acquisitions Group (LAG), a San Antonio-based real estate investment firm. Lynd added the property to its garden-style apartment community portfolio and will rebrand it to   Apex at Royal Oaks. The property has 282 units with 1-, 2- and- 3 bedrooms.
Apartment exteriors were repainted to shades of grey as part of the property's renovations and rebranding to Apex of Royal Oaks.
LAG will invest $5 million modernizing all amenities including new AC units, a new fitness center, a clubhouse featuring a Starbucks Coffee bar, plus a game room with foosball and billiards. Fresh paint in shades of grey replaced the former cream exterior color on all units.

LAG is spending approximately $12,000 per unit, bringing the interiors in line with new construction by adding hard-surface quartz countertops and ceramic tile backsplashes in the kitchens, as well as quartz countertops in the bathrooms. The swimming pool will get new furniture and all gates and fences will be redone. Plans also feature top to bottom upgrades including new flooring throughout each unit, new cabinetry, plumbing, stainless steel appliances, LED lighting, Nest thermostats, and USB charging stations.

Lynd estimates 12 to 18 months to fully complete the renovations.
