US Coast Guard Visits CCA
|
On Wednesday, May 19, Cape Cod Academy welcomed four members of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) to our campus. Students attended presentations given by Lt. Robert Turley, Helicopter Pilot, Lt. William Martin, General Aviation Pilot, Mr. Russ Gasdia, Immediate Past Flotilla Commander Woods Hole, and Mr. Christopher Brown, Helicopter Mechanic. The pilots shared stories about how they arrived in the Coast Guard, one via the Coast Guard Academy and the other via Norwich Academy, as well as information about missions and daily activities. Mr. Gasdia spoke to students about boating safety, and Mr. Brown was able to reiterate the importance of what Mr. Gasdia was talking about from the perspective of someone who flies over the water in a helicopter, sometimes looking for missing persons. CCA wants our students, staff, and faculty to be safe on the water this summer in boats, canoes, kayaks, or paddle boards. Safety first! We look forward to a return visit from the USCG next year when they, hopefully, will be able to arrive in their helicopter on one of our fields.

Spanish Guest Visits Lower School Students
This week, Dr. Clara Mesonero, an alumni parent, visited our lower school students to speak about Spain, its culture, and traditions. She showed the students where major cities were located on a map and shared pictures of cultural events, such as La Tomatina (the tomato throwing festival), the running of the bulls in Pamplona, and the Feria Sevilla in Seville, Spain. She also talked a little about bullfighting and the matador performing the dance with the bull. She brought some flamenco dresses with her, and several students learned basic steps and movements which they demonstrated on the stage.

Sixth-Graders Raise More Than $2000 for South Sudan
Having read A Long Walk to Water and been inspired by Salva Dut, the young man
portrayed in the book, sixth-grade students in Mrs. Barbieri’s English class took part in
the “Iron Giraffe Challenge” to raise money for the non-profit organization, Water for South
Sudan. Together the classes raised $2,386.00. This money will bring hygiene education and supplies to a Sudanese village as well as purchase numerous water pumps. These pumps allow fresh water to be brought to the villages which provides multiple health and safety benefits and simultaneously allows girls who would normally have to travel miles for water to instead attend school. Congratulations to the sixth-grade class who has truly made a difference in the lives of others.
