Dr. Washington, who holds doctoral degrees in philosophy and neuroscience, comes to us from Michigan State University, where he served as Director of Analytics and Special Projects in the Office for Research & Innovation for the past seven years. Dr. Washington also has significant experience in management consulting and startup ventures. We look forward to the leadership and energy he will bring to this position and to the Institute in general. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Washington.

Dorene Markel, MS, MHSA, will remain with the Institute for the next 14 months in the new role of Director of Strategy and Special Projects as she begins her phased transition to retirement. She will also continue as the Brehm Center Director during this time.
Welcome New MDRC and MCDTR Manager of Research Administration
Brenda Phillips
Please join us in welcoming Brenda Phillips as the new Manager of Research Administration for the MDRC and MCDTR. Brenda will take over from Mary Malec, who will retire on June 4, in overseeing the administration of both centers.

Brenda joined the University of Michigan in 2004, working initially in Financial Operations before moving to the Division of General Medicine in 2008. During her time in General Medicine, Brenda held a broad set of pre-award and post-award responsibilities and will bring a wealth of talent and expertise to her new position with the MDRC and MCDTR. We are delighted to have Brenda aboard!
Patients hospitalized for COVID-19 are experiencing a broad spectrum of long-term multi-organ issues involving pulmonary, cardiovascular, kidney, metabolic, mood and neurologic complications. Most recently, it’s become apparent that the risk of developing these complications is high even in patients who only experienced mild forms of COVID-19.

Now, to better serve this population, Michigan Medicine is establishing clinics to provide post-discharge care to both adults and pediatric patients experiencing these long-term post COVID symptoms and complications. Read more at Michigan Medicine News
2021 Clinical Translational Research Scholars Program
Congratulations to Dr. Yu Kuei Lin on being selected as the 2021 Clinical Translational Research Scholars Program (CTRSP) awardee. Dr. Lin's application, "A Personalized Mobile Health Program for Improving Hypoglycemia Management in Adults with Type 1 Diabetes" set him apart as a promising early career clinical scientist at the University of Michigan.

The CTRSP seeks to identify and support the most promising early-stage scholars focused on clinical research relevant to diabetes. The program provides 50% salary support for up to 3 years, protecting this time from clinical care duties to allow successful clinical research scholarly activities.
The Caswell Diabetes Institute (CDI) Seminar Series features plenary seminar events addressing the broad interests in diabetes-, obesity-, metabolism-, and complications (DOMC) related research and care across the University of Michigan campus and worldwide. The CDI Seminar Series occurs three times per year in the fall, winter and spring.

The CDI Enrichment Committee is seeking speaker nominations for the 2021-22 academic year. For the fall seminar, we are seeking speaker nominations/ideas to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Please submit your fall nominations by June 20, 2021. For the winter and spring seminars, all ideas are welcome.

To nominate a potential speaker please provide the speaker’s name, affiliation, link to their website, and a short comment on their research topic and how it relates to DOMC-related research and care.  Nominations are accepted from all faculty, trainees and staff.  Submit your nominations here.
