Psalm 118 begins with, “O give thanks to the LORD, for God is good; God’s steadfast love endures forever!”
Throughout our Stewardship Season about Gratitude, I’ve been reflecting on all we should be thankful for as a church family. For 74 years, Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church has faithfully ministered throughout our community. A space was dedicated to glorify God and bring people together. Individuals came together as one body to express Christ’s love through the generous giving of their time and talents. The church responded to various needs by partnering to create important ministries of service like that of the Day School, Scout Troop 48, and Holston Habitat for Humanity. And that faithful history continues as we live into our missional identity by making the necessary preparations to minister for the next 74 years!
While this intentional process of discernment takes time and effort, I am so thankful for how this congregation is already responding to the movement of God’s Spirit. Thank you for the many ways you enrich the life of our church family by actively participating in worship, both in-person or on-line. Thank you for continuing to create a hospitable community of faith where all are welcome and everyone feels comfortable to connect and grow. Thank you for lovingly serving others by volunteering as an usher, a Sunday school teacher, or a Halloween trunk (or table) decorator. Thank you for investing in our ministry’s future by addressing needed facility repairs, like the exterior work on the steeple that began this week. Thank you for patiently working within our Presbyterian system as we continue following God’s call to come closer together as one congregation in worship, study, and service. Thank you for prayerfully supporting your congregational leaders throughout unexpected challenges and necessary changes. Most of all, thank you for continuing to build deep and meaningful relationships within this church family, and for beginning to do so with me.
The Psalmist ends twenty-seven verses later by repeating, “O give thanks to the LORD, for God is good, for God’s steadfast love endures forever.” May all the in-between verses of our shared story be filled with such thanksgiving and praise.
Gratefully,
- David
