COVID-19, Family, & Beyond

Everyone keeps saying, "these are unprecedented times", and they are correct. COVID-19 has landed in Monterey County.

On March 17th, I suspended my landscape supply operations and ever since I've been scrambling to save my business and spending as much time as possible leaning on my faith, family and strength in community. I have not been idle one bit and there is great work ahead to make sure our region is spared public health, economic or mental distress in this.

I have embraced the era of Zoom and digital connection as you will see in this newsletter. Please stay active and safe.

Proud to support Victory Mission this week with essentials in the wake of COVID-19. More than 50 homeless men & women in transition depend on this vital community resource. Please call their house phone with any interest to provide aid (831) 424-5688.

This week I attended a virtual board meeting for the Seaside Rotary and we committed $1,000 toward a $100,000 fundraising campaign for the Monterey County Food Bank.

City of Salinas Increases Protections for Homeless Residents during COVID-19 Outbreak

The City of Salinas (City) is taking action to protect its most vulnerable residents amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Additional accommodation and shelter.

The City, in partnership with Community Homeless Solutions (CHS) officially opened the Chinatown Navigation Center (Center) on March 31st for twenty-four hour shelter as well as case management and housing navigation services.

  • Improved hygiene and sanitation services and outreach.

I was able to have a helping hand in the installation of seventeen (17) pairs of portable restrooms and hand washing units, as well as four (4) individual hand washing stations to provide critical sanitation services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Increased funding for Food Bank for Monterey County

In recognition of the dire need to increase food access to these vulnerable populations, the City immediately identified an additional $23,580 of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, which will be redirected to the Food Bank.

Business Resources and Local Support

As a small business owner myself, I understand the significance of the financial threat that we are facing and the impact it is having on our employees. Below is a list of resources for businesses and those who wish to support local business:

  • Businesses can add their name to a platform called "Support Local" that allows customers to easily purchase gift cards. Launched by The Californian this week, they urge customers to consider supporting their local businesses during this hard time and buy a gift card.

  • Residents are still encouraged to eat local in Salinas and Monterey areas for carry-out orders to help support businesses.

Surviving COVID-19 ZOOM Call for Small Businesses

In mid-March our local economy was impacted by the introduction of Coronavirus to Monterey County. With a Shelter In Place Order in effect, small businesses have shuttered and unemployment has skyrocketed when it would traditionally be at a record low. You are invited to join representatives of business, banking and industry associations for a glimpse at where we’re at and where we’re going.

Join us on Wednesday, April 8th from 6:00pm-7:00pm

The meeting is free and you can simply login by clicking
