We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about masks since last Purim. Not the masks we might have worn on that day, but the ones that we have been wearing every day since. And we have continued that practice for close to a year, covering up a part of ourselves in order to protect ourselves.
Esther also needed to hide part of herself in our story. It is only when her very life was on the line, that she had the courage to reveal the fullness of herself. In that moment, she removed her mask, removed the protection that it provided, and was willing to expose all of who she was.
Long before March 2020, we walked around with masks on. Pretending to be something that we are not. Hiding the fullness of ourselves for fear of whether we will be accepted or loved for all of who we are. The Purim story is not about putting masks on, but about taking them off. It isn’t about hiding who you are, but about being the fullest version of yourself.
While we must continue to wear our physical masks, let’s all gain from the story of Purim the courage to remove the other masks that we wear, being all of who we are, just as Queen Esther did millennia ago.

THE KBI CHORAL SHABBAT MA'ARIV VIRTUAL PROJECT
|
|
This week's virtual choral Shabbat prayer is Ahavat Olam, the last prayer before the Sh'ma, wherein we praise God for giving us the Torah, a sign of God's love for the Jewish People. It appears on page 29 of the blue Sim Shalom Siddur for Shabbat and Festivals. As with all the videos in this series, time is given for private prayer between the p'ticha (opening) and the chatima (summary, closing) text. https://youtu.be/0LU98Wu1cU0

KBI OFFICE CLOSURE
Our office will be staffed every day of the week. We still ask that anyone who plans to come by the synagogue alert us in advance so we can assure someone is there to meet them at that time. The best way to reach any of our office staff, clergy, or lay leadership is via email and all of the relevant synagogue email addresses are listed below.

There are many blessings that happen in all of our lives such as the birth of a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild; the engagement or marriage of a loved one; or a promotion at work or a volunteer award. These events lend balance to times of sadness, such as the death or illness of a loved one. We at Kehillat Beth Israel are grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you - to be a source of community in both times of celebration and times of sorrow. Below you will find some of the events in our community from the last few weeks. Please continue to share with us your happy occasions so that we may share them here in the future.

And in the spirit of gratitude, we also take this opportunity to thank the members of our community for their charitable gifts to the synagogue. We could not do the important work that we do at Kehillat Beth Israel without your generous support. We are so thankful for your continued contributions that allow us to grow and thrive. Todah Rabbah!
