NorCal Hunter Jumper Association

The NorCal Hunter Jumper Association aims to promote hunter, jumper and equitation divisions at Central and Northern California horse shows.

NorCal members earn points throughout the year toward various programs and awards. Their annual awards presentation is traditionally held in-person at their January banquet. In light of the pandemic, NorCal got creative with their 2020 awards. “We had to be resourceful because we didn’t have our annual awards banquet,” explained Melissa Kalember, one of the NorCal board members and the Vice-Chair of the USHJA Affiliate Committee. “We decided to make a special social media campaign highlighting our champions.”

In addition to year-end awards, NorCal offers a variety of medal finals, jumper awards, equitation classics, and more. In 2020, NorCal held their medal finals at the West Palms Events Sacramento International Horse Show. “NorCal gives back so much to its members,” commented NorCal President Denize Borges. “We work hard to come up with programs and awards to help support all levels in the industry.”

NorCal members can enter a lottery for the chance to participate in their annual clinic. “We offer a free clinic to our members each December,” Denize shared. “In 2020, we had to cancel the clinic due to the pandemic. This year, we are planning to hold our clinic at Murieta Equestrian Center. The clinic welcomes all ages and levels, including professionals. In the past some of our clinicians have included top riders such as Michael Endicott, Will Simpson, Mandy Porter, and Scott Hofstetter.”

The NorCal Hunter Jumper Association is proud to be a USHJA Affiliate Organization. “We are really excited about the grants that USHJA is now offering,” Melissa noted. “We also look forward to nominating riders for the 2'0'' and 2'6'' Affiliate Championships at The Las Vegas National Horse Show. Danae Fryman of USHJA has been great in helping fine tune these programs and spread the word about them.”

USHJA Recognized Riding Academy Spotlight: Elvenstar Riding Academy
We heard from Cathy Rifkin to learn more about Elvenstar Riding Academy, a USHJA Recognized Riding Academy in Moorpark, California.

Tell us a little about your program and who you serve.
Elvenstar is a full service riding academy serving a broad range of riders. We start riders as young as 3 years old in our Parent & Me classes. Our program takes children and adults from first time in the saddle to advanced jumping at 2’3”. From there, Elvenstar training programs are in place to take riders to a higher level of competition, both regionally and nationally.

What made you want to become a Recognized Riding Academy?
Our founder, Jim Hagman, started the academy 35 years ago. It has always been professionally managed with an emphasis on horsemanship and we strive to uphold the highest standard in our industry. Becoming a USHJA Recognized Riding Academy will allow us to be in touch with all levels of our sport.

Briefly tell us about your star lesson horse and why he/she is the best lesson horse around!
Our 26-year-old Harry aka "Elvenstar Harry Potter" has been with us for about 12 years and has been the best at all academy levels from walk/trot to 2'3" jumping. He took Augusta Iwasaki to her first championships at the Desert Circuit shows in Thermal as well as many riders at local shows. He is an academy favorite since he will put up with pony costumes at Halloween, reindeer antlers at Christmas, Easter Egg hunts, day camp, and birthday parties with a saintly attitude.
