Why do you YP?

I ‎ joined YP to grow my network and meet new people when I first moved to Dubuque. Now I've ‎learned, YP not only provides me with networking opportunities, but it has allowed me to learn more ‎about our local businesses and has given me opportunities to give back to the community. ‎ It’s ‎also great to hear from the guest speakers at the monthly luncheons—they have taught me many ‎lessons in both my personal and professional life.‎

Gary Dolphin

Voice of the Hawkeyes &

Owner of Gary Dolphin Bar

Gary shares his career journey, his accomplishments, and what he learned along the way.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Gary grew up in Cascade, Iowa watching his parents as they ran their family business.

  • Those early years showed him the importance of hard work, so Gary had multiple jobs growing up. Each job taught new skills or understanding of certain areas, but nothing was as valuable as learning how to communicate with others!

  • Learning the importance of communication skills set Gary on the fast track for his career.

  • The second important lesson Gary learned through his career journey was that business is critical to our world, and supporting national institutions such as the banks only helps our economy.

  • Gary spent many years in the banking industry, which he loved, but also took the time to enjoy sports broadcasting. He used his vacation time to broadcast for Northwestern University, which eventually lead to his role as “The Voice of the Hawkeyes” at University of Iowa.

  • Gary also advocated for volunteering in the community. Not only is volunteering a great way to make connections with new people, it’s great to be able to help others.

  • Gary was a wealth of knowledge and advice, but these were some of our favorite:
  • Stay in the best mental and physical shape as you can, that will only help as you age.
  • Don’t ever burn bridges with people no matter if you don’t like them. You never know what’s going to come of it.
  • You can never read enough, or spell correctly.
  • Gary’s 3 P’s: Passion, Pride, and Perseverance
