Teacher Feature: Ms. Ursino
Ms. Ursino with the 1st grade class on the First Day of School.

What is your name?
Lanae Ursino

What do you teach at The Summit?
First Grade

How long have you been working in education?
I worked with preschool and as a substitute teacher for 3 years, and this is my second year in an elementary classroom.

Where did you go to college?
Drury University. Go Panthers!

What was your major?
Elementary Education

When you were in school, what was your favorite subject?
I've always loved math, but I've also gotten to explore some other cool subjects over the years. Chemistry, environmental studies, fashion design, and pottery have been some of my favorites!

Now that you're a teacher, what is your favorite lesson to teach?
I love to teach reading! It's so much fun to watch my students grow into great readers throughout the year. I especially love those moments when a skill they've been working on finally clicks, and they get that "I finally got it!" look on their face!

What made you want to become a teacher?
I had really great teachers when I was a child. They made me feel smart and capable and helped me develop my love for learning. I wanted to be able to have that effect on others. I've also always loved working with children and being in the classroom, so it just made sense to me!

What is your favorite thing about teaching at The Summit?
So many things! I love the freedom I have as a teacher to expose my students to all kinds of interesting learning opportunities. I also love our big backyard, and, most importantly, I love the sense of community between the staff, students, and parents that I've experienced at The Summit!

What makes a good day at school?
A day when my students make me laugh, which is pretty much every day! I love to see their big personalities come out in the classroom.

If you could take your class on a field trip anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
A deep sea diving trip. How cool would it be to learn about all those interesting deep sea animals up close?

If you had a time machine, what period of time would you travel to (or the future)?
I think I would go back to the 1960s so I could watch the Civil Rights Movement happen. So much important history was made in that decade, and I think it would be very cool to see it in person.

What's something you think everyone should try at least once?
Jazzercise! It's dance fitness, and it's so much fun! Lots of people are missing out on a lot of fun because they think they can't dance. You totally can!

What is the next book on your "to be read" list?
Stuff You Should Know: An Incomplete Compendium of Mostly Interesting Things. It's quite the title, I know! It's a book written by the hosts of my favorite podcast: Stuff You Should Know. They've kept my interest for years with all kinds of neat topics, so I know this book is sure include lots of interesting facts.

¡Ven Conmigo! ¡Mira The Summit Difference!

Señora Cassandra Raven says, "We have the unique opportunity not only to teach them another language but also to demonstrate the importance of diversity, ethics, and compassion for a group of people that share different customs and beliefs, and how that's perfectly okay. Learning Spanish at The Summit opens up doors to endless opportunities for our students, and that's something to be very passionate and excited about."

Participation is completely optional and free of charge. Teachers also use the directory as a reference for potential guest speakers in their classrooms and/or field trip opportunities.
