Treasure Valley Association of Health Underwriters

This quarter is already off to a great start. Our local chapter had their first breakfast meeting of the year on January 9th with over 50 members in attendance. We ended the month with a number of our members attending Day on the Hill on January 30th. On Thursday, February 13th, we have a lunch meeting at the Galaxy Event Center. Our speaker in February will be Lori Wolff from the Department of Health and Welfare. At the end of February, 6 of our local members will be heading to Washington D.C., to attend the 2020 Capitol Conference where we will have the opportunity to meet with Representatives from Idaho.

Please mark your calendar for our upcoming Bowling Tournament to be held on Thursday April 2nd at Westy’s Garden Lanes in Garden City. All proceeds will be donated to the Idaho Suicide Hotline.

We are currently looking for individuals that would like to participate on the TVAHU Board for the 2020-2021 year. Please let me or one of your other local board members know if you are interested in participating on this great leadership team.

February is finally here. Having lived through a tumultuous January 2020 it makes the open enrollment period seem like dreamy days of yore when I had the ability to help everyone that calls. I find it very easy to throw stones at over worked frustrated DHW employees and blame them for some of the sordid experiences that happened in the open enrollment period. I was always taught to never make a complaint unless I have a solution. I would like to propose putting together the challenges we have in our industry and using a unified voice to effect change in our industry. The process of working through DHW and YHI in Idaho is still relatively new to all of us. I think we have a unique opportunity to direct our own destiny. I propose we send written copies of the complaint stories to our communication chair Brett Thomas and let him compile them in a way we can present them to DHW with our concerns. We then may be able to sit down with DHW and standardize the way incomes are verified for the purposes of APTC. I think there can be more valuable input from the organization rather than individuals. In this process I think we can also learn from the mistakes of everyone. I am not a perfect person or agent and I revel the opportunity to "seek first to understand and then to be understood."
