Deepwater Horizon 10th Anniversary
We remember the men who lost their lives and all those involved in the tragedy
|
|
Although we have faced many challenges since that fateful day ten years ago, Louisianians should be proud of the work completed so far to further protect and restore our coast... but our work is far from over.
Fueled by billions in civil and criminal fines and penalties resulting from the spill, Louisiana has implemented major components of their Comprehensive Master Plan, with much more to come. In the next year alone, Louisiana will invest over $1 billion in our coast, resulting in 14,000 acres benefited in dredging alone and thousands of jobs.
Specific to the spill, under the guidance of Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and structure of the State's Coastal Master Plan,
nine
restoration projects have been completed,
twelve
projects are in or near construction phase, and
26
projects are in engineering and design to mitigate the disaster's damages.
Examples of these projects in or near the Bayou Region include Caminada Headlands Beach and Dune Restoration project on Elmer's Island in Grand Isle, Caillou Lake Headlands (Whiskey Island) off the coast of Terrebonne Parish, Queen Bess Island located northeast of Grand Isle, and currently under construction is the Terrebonne Basin Barrier Island and Beach Nourishment project encompassing Belle Headland, Timbalier Island, and Trinity Islands.
