Food Composting Is Now in Rowayton

  • A new pilot program will start this coming week in Rowayton that will allow residents to dispose of their food waste so that it can be recycled.
  • Beginning this Wednesday, April 29th large collection bins will be available for individual drop-off of food waste from 8:30 AM until 1:30 PM at the Rowayton Community Center (33 Highland Avenue).
  • These large bins will be available weekly -- every Wednesday from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM
  • Please review the graphics to understand composting and to determine what can and cannot be included in this program. Plastic bags and pet waste are not allowed.

More details:
  • This pilot program is an initiative of the City of Norwalk and is initially only taking place in Rowayton. The timing is fortuitous as we are all home, cooking and generating a lot of food waste.
  • The food waste collection bins will be located behind the Library and across from the equipment garage at the Community Center. The food waste may dropped off in paper, BPI compostable bags (see below) or loose in the bins.
  • NO PLASTIC of any kind (bags, packaging, wraps) or PET WASTE is allowed. These both contaminate the compost.
  • BPI compostable bags can be found locally at Whole Foods as well as online at Amazon and Target.
  • It is important to maintain physical distance while dropping off food scraps, and to wear gloves while touching the bins
  • If you have questions/concerns about something that can be collected, please email composting@Norwalkct.org
