RECTOR'S CORNER
As many of you have experienced, prayer can be transformative. Spending time with God in prayer can be life-giving and perspective shaping. I know that for me, there have been many times when I have faced a challenging or difficult time and experienced prayer to be life-affirming. Because prayer is such an important spiritual practice and because we have recently returned to having an opportunity for the Prayer Partners, people who are trained to pray with you and for you on the second and forth Sundays of the month, I am delighted to welcome two guests for whom prayer is foundational in their lives.

This Sunday, at 9:30am in Sacquety Hall, you will have an opportunity to learn from two guests from the Order of St. Luke: Kathleen Adams (Regional Director) and Sister Patricia Terry (Chapter President at St. Cross Episcopal Church in Hermosa Beach). The Order of St. Luke’s is an international, inter-denominational, Christian healing organization, which is made up of healing communities dedicated to offering healing prayer in Jesus’ name to all who are in need. More information can be found at: Who We Are – OSL (osltoday.org)

I hope that you come to this Sunday between services in Sacquety Hall.

Then ,on July 23rd, the Wisdom Group will be taking a day-trip to the Getty Villa Museum. Among the museum’s current exhibits is an ancient Assyrian artwork. To help provide some theological and historical background to this theologically important kingdom, the Rector’s Bible Study, beginning this Tuesday, will be studying the Biblical perspectives of Assyria. The Assyrians play an important role in ancient Israel’s history because they conquered the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 B.C.E. Come and learn how our Scriptures viewed these events. The Rector’s Bible Study is every Tuesday at 11am in Sacquety Hall.

God’s blessing be upon you,

Fr. Nathan Biornstad+
Rector
Our mission trip to Navajo Nation

The week of firsts, I found this to be the theme of our trip to the Navajo Nation. The trip was a combination of St. Wilfrid’s and St. Clement’s youth groups. There was a total of twelve of us. Our week started off on Sunday leaving St. Wilfrid at 7:20 a.m. and heading up to Williams, Arizona. We wanted to take advantage of our proximity to the Grand Canyon, so on Monday we headed up to the canyon. For many of us this was our first visit to the Grand Canyon. It is truly something that must be seen in person.

After the Grand Canyon we headed East to Gallop, New Mexico, to the Retreat center of the Sacred Heart. This would be our base camp for our trips into the Navajo Nation.

For the first three days we were involved in service projects for the communities of St. Bonaventure Indian Mission and School and the Good Shepherd Mission of the Episcopal Church. Our teams took on the work of assisting with the foundation of a home and the landscape work at both communities. I am so proud of the youth on our trip, they dug in and gave their 100% to the work they were asked to do.

In the afternoon on each of those days and on Friday we were able to see many of the sights on the reservation. We went to the Ice Cave and Bandera Volcano, a first for all of us. We hiked up to the top of Window Rock, saw the Navajo Nation Museum and Zoo. We visited downtown Gallop and enjoyed a Hopi Grass Dance.

As far as seeing the beauty of the reservation, I think the best day was visiting the Canyon de Chelly, National Monument another first for us. The beauty of the Canyon is indescribable.

When sharing the trip with someone here at the church, they asked; after financial giving and service projects what else can we do for the Navajo people? I had to give that a great deal of thought and here is what I said; We can learn, understand and be aware of what has happened to the Navajo People. The injustice of what happened to them and their land. Being in solidarity with them, I believe will bring compassion for the people, and that is a good start.

The Wednesday Morning Prayer at 7:15 a.m. in the main sanctuary, is an opportunity to connect with God and others to be spiritually nourished mid-week.
A welcoming time of worship, the service begins with a thoughtful exploration of Holy Scripture, Eucharist and concludes with a meaningful time of prayers of intercession for God's people.

SCRIP Cards
What is this “SCRIP” program?

After each service you might notice people around a table buying scrip.

How does this help the church?

St. Wilfrids can buy gift cards at a reduced rate. A $100 gift card for Walmart, Arco, Amazon, and many others costs the church less than the $100, some cards 2% less, some cards 9% less. Then the church pockets the difference.

I believe that most of us shop without using cash these days. Then at the end of the month you pay off cards through the bank. You can buy your groceries, your fast food, your gasoline with the scrip cards from St. Wilfrids.

We have dozens of different cards. Please come over to the table and talk to us. Buy some cards and see how easy it is to give money to the church at no cost to yourself.

We look forward to seeing you soon. Thanks.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PARISH NURSES
As we move into summer, keep your eyes on the COVID numbers and maintain your preventive health options to protect yourselves from the spread of this disease. There has been a general increase in the number of reported COVID cases over the past 2 months, so it’s important to remain vigilant.
We'd love to hear from you!
