At the 21st Annual McKim Lecture, presented on March 2, 2022, Andrew Cogar and James Strickland explored the rich architectural history and development of one of America’s most beautiful cities: Newport, Rhode Island. Looking at its famous Gilded Age mansions, Palladian-inspired public buildings, and Colonial homes, Andrew and James showed how Newport’s unique revival over the past five decades, via preservation and historically-sensitive development, serves as an essential model for other communities.

The Classicist No. 18 is now available to read online in its entirety.
Focused on the United States' Washington Mid-Atlantic region, the Classicist No. 18 explores the city's rich architectural history as well as contemporary examples of classical design through professional and student portfolios as well as academic articles authored by leaders within the field. Contributors include Guest Editor W. Barksdale Maynard, architectural author; Witold Rybczynski, Martin and Margy Meerson Professor Emeritus of Urbanism at the University of Pennsylvania; David Frazer Lewis, Associate Professor of Architectural History at the University of Oxford; and Bryan Clark Green, Director of Historic Preservation for Commonwealth Architects in Richmond.

1.25 AIA CES Learning Units|Elective and 1.25 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture
In the 19th century, Grecian architecture was utilized to help develop what is often referred to as the country’s first national architecture. It led an aesthetic movement that crossed social boundaries and affected urban and rural landscapes of areas as different as Baltimore, Maryland and New Orleans, Louisiana. This course examines the development of this Greek Revival movement in the United States by investigating its origins, discussing how this architectural language became prevalent in our country, and demonstrating through a Louisiana case study how it affected the architectural development of existing building traditions.

On April 27th, the ICAA was honored to host Ken Pursley, principal and partner at Pursley Dixon Architecture, in the most recent installment of the "Book Club" series, during which he provided insights into the new book, Finding Home. In this book Ken Pursley and the team at Pursley Dixon explore 15 breathtaking homes in three distinct styles: rustic mountain escapes, dreamy retreats by the water, and elegant houses in town. Now the entire fascinating discussion is available to watch online in full.

Join the cohort of the 2022 Summer Studio in Classical Architecture for the final week of the immersive program, which took place from June 13th through July 9th, as students describe this year's experience in their own words. The final article documenting the fourth week of the program is now online, culminating in the participants' presentation of their final projects.
Each year, the ICAA National Office holds the Summer Studio in Classical Architecture, a four-week immersive program that introduces a cohort of university-level students to the core tenets of classical design. Students divide their time between the design studio and New York City itself, using the city as a 'living laboratory' for measured and analytical drawing; the relationship of the city's architecture to principles of urbanism; and more.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the newly named McKim, Mead, & White Awards (formerly known as the Stanford White Awards), which will take place on Wednesday November 30th at the Metropolitan Club in New York in an eagerly anticipated return to our annual in-person ceremony.
The Awards, named in honor of the landmark firm that had an indelible impact on the architecture of New York and the history of classicism in America, honors recently completed projects of note in architecture, interior design, landscape design, urbanism, historic preservation, craftsmanship, and student work within New York, New Jersey, and Fairfield County, Connecticut. Project Submissions for the McKim, Mead & White Awards are due Friday, September 9th.

Covering two adjoining centers of stunning classical and neoclassical architecture built during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, this exclusive tour is a firsthand opportunity to experience glorious Rococo architecture and interiors, among other highlights.

Led by Mark Donnelly, a noted expert on Irish decorative arts and antiques, this tour will feature visits to some of the area's finest estates, as well as stays at the privately owned Ballywalter Park, an Italianate Palazzo built in 1846 and now the family home of Lord Dunleath, and the privately-owned Belle Isle Castle, home of Lord Nicholas Hamilton.

This excursion, which will include a stay at the world-renowned Ballyfirn, will be led by Robert O'Byrne, one of Ireland's best-known writers on architecture and design as well as a Board Member of the Irish Georgian Society.
