Today's COVID-19 Update: March 31, 2020
Note : When we resume distance learning after Spring Break (April 14), the District will be reducing the frequency of these daily updates as schools, teachers, and students continue to establish connections and increase regular communication.

School closures: State superintendent offers opinion on timeline
On Tuesday, State Superintendent for Public Instruction Tony Thurmond wrote in a letter to California's county superintendents that "it appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year " and continue to provide distance learning.

The letter was not a directive to schools. Folsom Cordova, in collaboration with other Sacramento County school districts and public health officials, are reviewing the guidance and will update the community should the District's closure be extended beyond May 1.
Distance learning: Tips for safe Zoom sessions with students
While Schoology is the District's official Learning Management Platform, we know that many teachers are using the Zoom video conferencing platform to enhance and reestablish connections with students

Here are some tips for keeping Zoom meetings secure:
  • Do not post your meeting weblink or ID on a public website.
  • Do not share the Zoom meeting information on social media or in public forums.
  • When scheduling a meeting, require a password to join the meeting in addition to generating a unique meeting ID (never use your personal meeting ID for meetings).
Please remember, students under 13 need parental permission to participate in Zoom meetings.  Also, it's a good idea to be mindful of your surroundings while participating or hosting (check your background and attire).
Employees: Normally pick up your paycheck? It's in the mail
Many of our faculty and staff choose to pick up their monthly paychecks. Due to our extended school closure, all printed paychecks for the most recent pay period have been mailed to our employees' homes.
#FCUSDstrong: Schools showing spirit amid uncertainty
Thank you to the dozens of you in our school communities w ho have been submitting snapshots of the ways you're staying connected and supporting each other during this time of crisis. We are compiling your notes of encouragement, photos and videos in one place and look forward to sharing as we head into Spring Break.

In the meantime, a couple of moments that have been making the rounds:
From our partners: Go outside, but keep your distance!
Due to confirmed COVID-19 cases in Folsom, and reports of large and small gatherings of people in public places without social distancing, the City of Folsom is taking additional safety measures by limiting access to community locations where maintaining safe social distancing has shown to be difficult.

More info on the city's website here.

Today's Mindful Moment: Staying connected
-from Dr. Channa Cook-Harvey, Director of Social-Emotional Learning, [email protected]

I don't know about you, but I've spent more time on phone calls and never-ending group text messages with close friends, long lost friends, distant family and colleagues in these past few days than I would typically spend in a month. Despite how physically disconnected I am from those who do not live in my home, I am finding myself surprisingly more connected to people who I haven't interacted with in a long time. I'm also finding that I enjoy these bursts of connectedness and I am going to try and be more intentional about it as one of my own mindful practices for this week.

It's simple: Each day, send a brief message to someone important. It can be a message of thanks, acknowledgement, gratitude, or just to say you're thinking about the person.

I first learned of this idea from an organization called Whole Life Challenge and the founders  explain that "Taking a moment to remind yourself and someone else that the relationship you have is not just important, but vital can bring a sense of connection, gratitude, and ease to your life. It can remind us how special this whole thing called life is, how amazing human beings can be, and how supported we all really are."

If you give this practice a try, let us know how it goes on our Facebook page!
