A Night United
Night to Unite was one of the hottest events of the summer last week (literally). Despite soaring temps, Red Wing proved it knew how to keep it cool. A total of 23 neighborhood events brought the night to life, bringing everything from games of soccer and tag to a water balloon fight. Police, Fire, Public Works, and other City representatives enjoyed connecting with the community, and neighbors got to know each other a little bit better. Thank you to everyone who participated! Night to Unite will be back again next summer. Mark the first Tuesday of August 2023 on your calendar.
Cents-ible Solutions
Financial reports and light reading don't often go hand in hand. The Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) is one step toward changing that. Knowing how your City's finances work is important to a lot of people – and it should be – and the PAFR helps communicate that information to a wide audience in a way that doesn't rely on technical jargon or industry speak. Graphs, charts, and short summary paragraphs break down City finances in a way that's easier to digest. Prefer to take a deep dive and see all the details? We've got the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for that. You can find both reports on the City website at any time, and you can take a look at previous years, too. It's City finances for everybody. Take a look today.
Staying On Track
Mark Vaughan Laurel Stinson Dennis Egan
Mark Vaughan, Hastings City Council Member; Laurel Stinson, Red Wing City Council Member; and Dennis Egan, lobbyist for the Great River Rail Commission, joined the Amtrak rail trip from the Red Wing station on August 4.
All aboard! A second train on the Twin Cities-Milwaukee-Chicago Amtrak line is likely on its way within the next year. Last week legislators and Great River Rail Commissioners took to the rails to experience the route, meet their Wisconsin counterparts, and more. Red Wing City Council Member Laurel Stinson is part of the commission and said having the second train would bring economic and environmental benefits to our community. Visiting businesspeople, tourists, residents, and college students would have even more convenient access with a second train, and more train travel means fewer cars on the road. The second train isn't a done deal quite yet; operating funding, scheduling, and other details need finalizing. Watch for more info as it's available, and consider making a trip on the train part of your upcoming travel plans.
Rooting for Trees
A healthy tree canopy is a win for everybody. Unfortunately, the emerald ash borer (EAB) insect is killing a quarter of our tree canopy here in Red Wing, and that's a statistic we don't want on our scorecard. Help build up our team of trees by planting various varieties on your property. Watch this video for the full tree planting playbook. You can also volunteer now to host a boulevard tree for when Public Works resumes planting this fall. Let's be environmental champions and build a winning roster together that'll hold up for years to come.
Get Out and Vote!
Have you voted today? If you haven't, you've still got plenty of time! Polls are open until 8 p.m. today for the City Council special and primary elections. Find your polling place here. Voters in Ward 2 will elect their next council member. Voters in Ward 4 and across Red Wing (for the At Large seat) will be choosing which candidates to send to the November 8 general election. Speaking of the general election, make sure to mark it on your calendars so you know when to vote again. Absentee voting starts September 23. Get out, vote, and make your voice heard.
All in a Day's Work
Kurt Krie
Kurt Krie is no stranger to challenges. As a Water Operator, Kurt’s job is to help produce over a million gallons of clean drinking water every day. Whether it's a change in the system, a malfunctioning pipe, or something that he hasn’t encountered during his 25 years in the Utilities Department, Kurt is ready to deal with anything unexpected that gets in the way of producing quality water. Outside of work, Kurt serves as the president of a horseshoe club down in Hay Creek. When he’s not hanging out in his hometown, he can be found snowmobiling on local trails or fishing down the Mississippi, activities he especially enjoys doing with his son, Cole, and black Lab named Frank. For 25 years, Kurt’s been dedicated to making safe drinking water for all of us, and that makes him a “ringer” in our book.
