Appreciation for Caregivers and Loved Ones

Since February gives us both National Caregiver Awareness Day (Feb. 21) and Valentine's Day, we would like to acknowledge the caregivers and loved ones who give so much in support of those with a cancer diagnosis. Their efforts and needs can often go unnoticed. As we near the end of winter, this is an opportunity to highlight some of the tools we have for loved ones and caregivers throughout the year.

My Cancer Circle is a free, private and customizable online tool that enables caregivers to coordinate a circle of family and friends to help provide emotional and practical support. Relaunched last year, the new app and updated website allow users to communicate with their volunteers by way of email, SMS texts and push notifications. These tools make it easier for caregivers to answer that constant question, "What can we do to help?"

In addition , we have a range of support groups, publications and workshops dedicated to particular aspects of caregiving. To give but a small sampling:

Currently open support groups include our Caregiver Support Group for Spouses/Partners and Young Adult Caregiver Support Group. Specific support groups include our Testicular Cancer Caregiver Support Group.

Recently updated fact sheets include Caring Advice for Caregivers: How Can You Help Yourself? and Counseling to Better Cope with Caregiving. We also offer advice centered around specific diagnoses, such as the booklet Caregiving for a Loved One With Prostate Cancer.

Our workshops on various topics include the upcoming For Caregivers: Care Coordination for Your Loved One Living with Cancer and Other Health Problems , which is part of the Life with Cancer series.

These are but a small portion of the help we are able to offer on the impacts of caregiving. For more on the topic, please look at our Caregiving resource page.

Let us take a moment to think about the efforts of these invaluable individuals and keep them in mind for the rest of the year.
