District of Lantzville Approved for Federal Contribution for Phase II Lantzville Commercial Core Revitalization Project
Pacific Economic Development Canada has approved a $487,500 contribution to the District of Lantzville from the Canada Community Revitalization Fund, towards the Phase II Project to revitalize our main street, Lantzville Road between Dickinson Road and Tweedhope Road, into a safe and accessible streetscape. The balance of the $650,000 project ($162,500) has been funded through the Gas Tax Fund. Phase II Project activities to implement the Village Commercial Core Improvement Plan and the Streetscape Design include the construction and installation of multi-use pathways, landscaped areas, banner poles, formalized parking, and formalized drainage on both sides of the road. Proudly supported by:
The Lantzville Commercial Core Revitalization Project started in 2013/ 2014 with the preparation of a Village Commercial Core Improvement Plan (the Plan) to establish a vision to create a functional, safe and visually attractive commercial core area, extending along Lantzville Road from Caillet to Tweedhope Roads. Council endorsed the Plan in 2019, including the July 2019 Lantzville Road streetscape concept design, as the first step to fulfill one of the fundamental goals of the Official Community Plan: Strengthen the Village Primary Commercial Core. Phase I, between Caillet and Dickinson Roads, was completed in 2021.

FireSmart – The Basics to Protect Your Home
Finally, after a persistent rainy spring we are starting to experience some traditional summer heat and sun. The flip side of that sunny good news is that our forests and vegetation are beginning to dry out and the Fire Danger Rating is beginning to climb. This means it’s time to start looking at FireSmarting our homes. Being FireSmart is all about living with and managing wildfire risk in your area and on your property. FireSmart principles are effective at reducing risk to life and property in the most extreme wildfire conditions across Canada, including here.

Simple actions you can take to start to FireSmart your home include:
  • Cleaning your gutters
  • Reducing and removing the combustible leaves and vegetation directly around your home
  • Mowing your lawn to below 10cm
  • Prune low hanging branches up to 2m around your home
  • Have a plan in case there is a wildfire and you must evacuate your home.
Bylaw Reminders
Effective April 16th Burning Ban in Effect Until October 14th
Category 2 OPEN FIRES (burn barrels, backyard burning, incinerators, burn piles, burning grass, fireworks, binary exploding targets, sky lanterns, outdoor burning, etc.) are NOT permitted on private and public property in the District of Lantzville. Watch for notices issued by the provincial government restricting open burning, or banning campfires due to drying conditions.
NO OPEN FIRES ARE PERMITTED ON ANY BEACH AT ANY TIME OF THE YEAR; only portable propane campfire apparatus (CSA or ULC approved) are permitted on the beach between the hours of 11:00 am - 8:00 pm.

Stage 2 Watering Restrictions – Effective May 1st

Under Stage 2 watering restrictions, sprinkling is permitted between the hours of 7:00 am and 10:00 am OR 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm for a maximum of 2 hours every other day on the following days:
  • odd-numbered addresses on odd-numbered days
  • even-numbered addresses on even-numbered days
Sprinkling includes watering lawns, ornamental shrubs, flowers and trees and use of pop-up spray, rotors and sprinklers. Putting in a new lawn? Apply for a new lawn watering permit by emailing district@lantzville.ca.
Be Prepared for Heat Warnings as
Temperatures Rise
Environment Canada has advised that heat warnings may be possible in the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) and Lantzville as temperatures rise. Residents are advised to be prepared to activate their personal heat plans and to stay safe and cool indoors during extreme heat by taking steps like those posted on the rdn.bc.ca extreme weather page:
  • Drink plenty of water and other liquids to stay hydrated
  • Take it easy, especially during the hottest hours of the day (generally 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm)
  • Seek cooler indoor and outdoor spaces
  • Check in on neighbours, friends, family members and at risk individuals
  • If you have air conditioning, be sure to turn it on
  • Take a cool shower or put part of your body in a cool bath
  • Wear a wet shirt or apply damp towels to your skin to cool down
  • If you do not have air conditioning, keep your home cooler by shading the windows from the outside using awnings or shutters or from the inside using curtains or blinds
  • Close windows and pull indoor/outdoor shades/blinds by 10:00 am to trap the cooler air inside and block the sun
  • Open windows and doors at around 8:00 pm to let the cooler, overnight air into the house
  • Use multiple fans to help move cooler air into the home overnight
  • Seeking relief in cooling spaces that are regularly open to the public, e.g. libraries, shopping centres, movie theatres and recreation facilities.
During extreme weather emergencies, the RDN will issue an emergency alert. To receive these free alerts directly via phone, email, text or app, sign up.
