Dear Ecumenical Friends,
As 2021 begins, we are once again called to attention by violence and disrespect for the social norms that hold our democratic society together. Yesterday's mob scene at the national capitol was a gut-punch that left many reeling. Almost immediately, came the response: violence is not the answer. And, of course we agree with that response.
However, as Christians we know what is needed is much deeper than a condemnation of violence. WE NEED A CHANGE OF HEART! As a nation we are in desperate need of repentance from the systems of white privilege, racial discrimination and abuse of people of color, poverty, physical/mental limitation, and sexual orientation.
I know that in your congregations and church structures, repentance is a spiritual path well known and well practiced. Repentance begins with an honest appraisal and concludes with deeds that restore right relationships with God, neighbor and community. Each of us will travel unique paths of repentance; together we will begin to sense what is needed for right relationships. We will be honest; we will change; we will be part of the righting of the world.
That's why it is essential that we continue! The offerings in this newsletter are new and previously published. Each could be a step of repentance. You may have nodded your head before; today you may register as a way of beginning your path of repentance.
