19 businesses offer tasty treats and specials for Chocolate Covered Boyne Friday & Saturday
Chocolate Boyne There are many reasons to spend the day in Boyne City, but nothing as sweet as chocolate indulgences throughout downtown. Chocolate Covered Boyne is your chance to experience chocolate treats and good deals at 19 participating businesses on February 14 & 15 during regular store hours, in celebration of Valentine's Day. This event is a great way to chase away the winter blues and indulge in delectable creations, all conveniently located in downtown Boyne City.  The event culminates in a CHOCOLATE DESSERT CONTEST from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Boyne City High School Hospitality Program classroom in the downtown Education Center building across the street from the library. Enter through the door on Main Street. This "tasty" competition, hosted by last year's winner, the Hospitality Class, is open to the public. Be a part of the action as our guest judges sample desserts prepared by local restaurants.  Dessert tasting will be free and the Hospitality students will have lunches available for purchase. Leadership class seeks funding help to build Riding Sensory Trail as this year's community service project
Leadership The 2020 Leadership Charlevoix County Class will be building a Riding Sensory Trail for Northern Michigan Equine Therapy as this year's Community Service Project.
This sensory riding trail will consist of a rich learning environment of woodland paths that consist of slopes, turns, varied footing, natural sights and sounds, and man-made activity stations. This integrated environment will challenge clients' balance, stimulate their senses, and encourage reaching therapeutic goals. Activity stations will be therapeutic stopping points along the trail that will offer clients the opportunity to see, hear, smell, touch, and talk about the items they encounter.  This trail will give all the clients at NMET an option to get out of the arena and onto the trail to participate in therapeutic activities.
The leadership class will complete all phases of the project from marketing and fundraising to actually building the trail. Because the programs offered by NMET are considered "alternative," their services are not covered by health insurance. All costs to clients are out of pocket or by scholarship funds raised by NMET.
The leadership class needs help to fund this great project. They hope that local businesses will become community partners and help make this project a reality. Here is more information on $250 and $500 sponsor opportunities.
> To become a sponsor or learn more, contact class member and fund-raising committee member Kim Akin by email at [email protected] or by phone at 231-582-6222.

North Central signs transfer agreements with 25 colleges
NCMC Transferring to a four-year college or university from  North Central Michigan College  will now be even simpler thanks to new transfer agreements signed with 25 Michigan colleges and universities.
"This will benefit our students tremendously," said Dr. David Roland Finley, president of North Central.  "The percentage of North Central students who transfer to a four-year institution has increased over the past five years to approximately 30 percent.  This agreement will ensure their seamless transfer for completion of a bachelor's degree, making it easier for them to reach their academic goals.  We believe students get their best start at North Central, and our region - and the entire Tip of the Mitt - benefits as a result."
Transfer agreements will allow North Central students to transfer more credits to four-year schools in the areas of biology, business, criminal justice and psychology. The new agreements specify major-specific courses that students should complete while enrolled at North Central that are common across all institutions in Michigan.  The identification of these courses makes it easier for students to complete essential courses before deciding where to transfer.
North Central  advisors  now have details available for students about which courses they should complete and how those courses apply to degree programs at the participating universities.

A ROCK CLIMBER'S STRUGGLE to come back after a devastating 100-foot fall will be explored at Lifetree Café on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 3:30 p.m. The program, titled "Overcoming Life's Obstacles: How a 10-Story Fall Changed One Man's Perspective," features a filmed interview with Craig DeMartino, an avid rock climber who tumbled off a rocky cliff and plummeted the equivalent of 10 stories. "Nobody falls 100 feet, hits the ground, and doesn't die. You should die," says DeMartino. "That's just the law of physics. I hit the ground anywhere from 90 to 120 miles per hour. You shouldn't be getting up." During the program, Lifetree participants will have the opportunity to talk about obstacles they've faced and overcome in their own lives.
