Friday, Dec. 18, is the final day to register to become a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and be eligible to vote to preserve the allowance for remote inspection of life-safety dampers in NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, and NFPA 105, Standard for Smoke Door Assemblies and Other Opening Protectives.

The vote will take place during the 2021 NFPA Conference & Expo June 22-25. To be eligible to vote, one must have been an NFPA member for a minimum of 180 days.

The AMCA Air Control Code Action and Review Committee (ACCARC) is urging AMCA members to join the NFPA to thwart an expected motion to weaken or remove provisions allowing remote testing made by organizations that conduct manual damper inspections.

By avoiding the need to inspect smoke and combination fire/smoke dampers manually, remote testing can save facility owners thousands of dollars in maintenance costs and make dampers a more appealing option.

The cost for a one-year membership is $175. If you wish to vote virtually (the 2021 NFPA Conference & Expo will be held in Las Vegas), there is expected to be an additional fee of $50.
